Hillbilly Cool Shirt

#1

With everyone talking about cool shirts and Hotlanta racing and such I thought I would share with those interested a hillbilly way of staying cool while on track. Someone mentioned this to me when I was having trouble with the heat at Barber about 4 years ago. I was coming off the track light headed and nauseated due to the extreme heat and even came in early one session as I was loosing focus. I would guess it is an old NASCAR trick but someone said to take a zip lock bag and fill with ice and put it under your suit on your chest. So I did. Man what a difference it made. I have since refined the system and purchased some tee shirts and cut one of the shirts up to make a pocket on the other shirts. I wear these shirts when I go out and just fill a quart zip lock with ice and stick it in the pocket. Another good thing is that when you are at impound you can then drink the melted ice. Keeping your core cool seems to work wonders for me. Give it a try and see if heat no longer becomes a big issue.

Good Luck,

Michael O.

here is another fairly simple alternative as long as you can find somewhere to keep the ice packs cold before the race…

I use something similiar

it is not an ice pack though but a gel that you freeze like water but it is not as cold to the touch and lasts longer.

You haven’t seen Hillbilly cooling technolgy until you have seen Al Taylor’s cool squirt system. Al has a cooler with a pump that squirts a blast of cool water right down his driving suit at the press of a button. Always looks like he took a piss on himself when he gets out of the car, but knowing Al he really may have pissed himself during the race:P

I have a poor mans version of a cool shirt that actually works very well. It uses ice packs that are phase change material. They stay charged for about 45 minutes and unlike frozen ice packs will not freeze your skin.

Since I just bought a "real" Cool Shirt I won’t be needing this one any more. If anyone is interested in it let me know.

My system works pretty good except you have to make sure the water line is not laying on the floorboard…seems the water in the line heats up quick…Also carry a supply of washer pumps as they seem to fail. My system is also good for squirting grid workers and girls with white t shirts on. All it takes is an old cooler and an e30 washer pump wired thru the cig lighter which is hot all the time, can also be used to help make weight…
