Free cylinder deactivation :(

#1

Finally got me car back together and running… well half way running… turns out it is only firing on cylinders 1, 3 and 5. Pulled the plug wires on 2, 4 and 6 while engine was running and no change in rpm.

I’m pretty sure its that round injector wiring harness connector as it was pretty corroded. I tried cleaning it up with electrical spray but its still green.

Guess I need to replace the entire harness huh? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

Every engine harness connector is a potential problem because the engine harness leads a hard life. In most cars the wires are tarnished from their ends to the firewall. Not only is the connection between each male and female connector suspect, but also the connection between each wire and it’s crimp on device inside of the connector.

The injector harness connector is one of the worst ones because water can collect in the connector boot. The permanent solution is to delete the connector and use individual crimp on connectors for the wires.

After you strip the insulation off of each wire, abrade the black tarnish off of the wire with a sandpaper or something. Then crimp on a weather proof connector. Gold star if you add a dab of conductive grease to each connector.

Woo Hoo! Running on all 6 cylinders now!!! So smooth…

I spent the better half of a day stripping all those wires and crimping on the ends while hanging over the fender… what a PITA!!! (especially with my big clumsy hands).

And yes I used Dielectric grease on the connectors!!!
