Why worry about no title? You are going to chop the car to bits. I suppose it is a state thing, but I don’t need a title to sell parts.
Fix or Rebuild?
Nothing needed to sell parts, just worried about final disposition of what would be left of the shell after cutting the back off. I’ve only taken one car to a salvage yard, and they were adamant about needing a title in order to take it.
No salvage yard around me will take a car without a title. The state checks them pretty frequently, apparently. However, I do have a scrap metal dealer who will take them, they get crushed same day and hauled away quickly.
Julian,
I once heard of a guy in the StLouis area that made some calls to the craiglist “we buy scrap cars and metal” listed folks and found several that didnt seem to mind dragging off a hulk w/o title. They seemed to have their outlets for scrap. What ever the outlying hamlet like a Wentzville in your area may be might have similar haulers/scrappers with more liberal view of required paperwork. good luck, doug
Thanks all. It’s kind of an academic question about the title/scrapyard at this point. I’m planning to take Al up on his offer, and I won’t be parting out a car.
Looks like a good hit, but as others have mentioned, if the subframe mounting points are still where they need to be, it can be fixed.
Lots going on in this thread, with lots of differing ideas and opinions. I understand those who say to just buy another shell and swap everything over, but that’s a TON of work. And while Ranger does have a point by saying you CAN sell the left over parts to hopefully recoup some of the repair costs- that can be a major PITA and many people don’t have the time, patience, storage space or obliging spouse/S.O. to make this feasible.
My thought would be to get it checked by an alignment/frame guy to make sure it’ll track straight when the sheetmetal is fixed, then commence to pulling and banging it out and see what you can do yourself. Shouldn’t be too awfully hard to cut the skin off and then rebuild the trunk floor/frame rail section with that from a parts car, then hang a “new” QTR panel and rear panel (or even 1/2 of the rear panel). I think it might even be easiest to just hang the replacement QTR and attach it with some of those large pop rivets (it’s a racecar afterall, right?).
If you can’t do the work yourself for whatever reason, I’d try to find a shop that works on race cars (i.e.- roundy-round cars or similar) and see what they can do for you. Rocky is good, but he’s probably alot more upscale than what you need here.
Maybe Al can join us one weekend out here at my place near Raleigh and we can give it a little redneck body work treatment. I’ve got a couple of large trees, some come-alongs, sawzall and a welder- we can definitely make some progress on it.
Oh, and I realize the rules are different from state to state about disposing of cars for scrap, but around here if the car is ~10 years old or older, you don’t need any paperwork to sell it for scrap. They will record the VIN and your personal details (Driver’s license number, etc), and have you sign a form stating that you are the owner of the car and/or have the legal right to sell the car. That’s it.
It’s silly to give a scrap car to someone if you have a way to haul it to the scrap place yourself, scrap metal prices are pretty strong right now, even a fully stripped e30 shell is worth $150-250.
Bret.
Re. value of a stripped shell. When I was done with Old #6 it had no drive train at all, no suspension at all, no subframes, and no front-right corner. A local PickNPull/scrapyard sent a flat bed to my house, dragged it up on to the bed, and gave me $200.
Between Rigmaster and the Reverend Al, this is going to be easy.
I dropped the car off with Rocky yesterday. WIth a HUGE THANKS to Al for providing a donor rear end, I’m looking forward to getting this car back on the track. CMP in May, anyone?

Given that you’ve made us wait for 3 years for this, you’re really under a lot of obligation to make this a seriously triumphant arrival. I think that it’s reasonable to expect a parade. Yes, a color guard, a couple HS bands with dancing girls, your car on a big float festuned by roses, and “Miss Kershaw presented by the Executioner”, to be followed by Shriners doing figure-8’s with CMP’s go-carts.
The parade threads thru the paddock and makes it’s way to the MCM circus tent. There, under bright lights your car is rolled to the dias fawned over by scantily clad models while Also Sprach Zarathustra thunders.
Or maybe it was 4years?
You may be the only guy in the racing universe that can actually name this song. But maybe something by Cee Lo Green would be better?

I dunno, is it made out of people?
Re. Also Sprach Zarathustra. Ranger was a band geek. Jazz band, Pep band, Marching band, concert band, I did all that shit. At a jazzfest our trumpet section would hit double C so hard the dust would come down off of the rafters. Was great fun. Oh to be young and stupid again.

The only thing I remember about when I met you is that you asked me why I didn’t bring eye-candy. There seems to be a common theme. That reminds me I need to find eye/tent-candy for my first race.
[quote]c loo green made out of people??
Damn Ranger that is funny

You guys are a bunch of closet intellectuals aren’t you? First ASZ, then an obscure sci-fi reference. Also a band geek myself. BB flat tuba. Talk about your Fart Brefs.
For the record, the answer to the question posed in this thread was “fix”. HUGE thanks to Al Taylor and Rocky’s Autobody. The car looks better now than it did before the race. Look to get back out on track soon-ish.
