Dyno and Exhaust

#1

By now we all have our opinions on the spec exhaust issue. Last weekend I was able to play on a dyno for a little while, and decided for giggles to do several runs. After I was sure the car was all warmed up I did a 5 or so runs with last years two pipe exhaust and than lifted the car and swapped out to the new spec exhaust. Leaving the car as is I did another 5 runs or so.

Here are the results. For my money the exhaust does in fact change performance, anyone willing to spend the money on trying multiple exhaust set ups and a time at the dyno could get 5 hsp and 5 ft/lbs of torque or more without any question.

This after swapping exhaust. all dyno runs were around the same, actually probably a bit closer on average to 158 hsp average and torque as you see here at 160.

as they say those are the facts

Carlton, thank you for providing data.

It is really (and I really mean really) great to see that the new system makes more power than what you removed. It would have been a major cluster had the results not been favorable. Good research on Carter’s part in finding a design that makes big numbers.

There is no arguement that a spec exhaust is/was needed for the series. There was a disagreement that everyone had/has to change. The way in which the change was implemented was not a smooth transition and it caused much dissention amoung the Spec E30 community. I was a big part of that controversy. Hindsight is 20/20. I apologize for the back-fighting that followed.

With the data in hand showing the good results…well, who would not want to change? Who would not want this proven system?

Really, the dyno numbers are impressive.

Robert, I’d like to commend you for posting this. Apology’s are hard to do sometimes and I admire you for posting what you did. Glad to have you back.

Carlton,
Thanks for sharing - I appreciate the work!
Hope to see you at VIR!

Carlton, great info - thanks for sharing it.

It would be great if someone else could do a similar dyno comparison with the stock exhaust to spec exhaust.

Thanks for sharing, pretty much validates what I suspected all along and why I was a supporter of a spec exhaust from the beginning (even if it made less power). Aside from the peak increase the area under the curve is so much better.

I’ve had this exhaust on my car for 3 years now and have never had a problem. How many track miles must that be? And no one could ever figure out how my car came to lay down such nice dyno numbers? Say what you want about the system, it just plain works. It’s inexpensive, strong, and it makes nice power.

GREAT… now there’s going to be even MORE demand for the exhaust!

Thanks for putting the numbers up.

Carlton and I discussed the demand issue last night but we both agreed that it is important to share the information with the group.

And let’s all remember (as Simon wrote) that in spec racing, it’s about having the same performance, not necessarily about the actual performance itself. No one wants to go backward in performance but having consistent performance is the goal.

I know that Paul is trying to get the systems out asap. With help and cooperation from the group, let’s get them to the new car builders first.

To that end - mine arrived today. Unbelievable weight difference between it and stock. The quality issues others have experienced do not seem to be present in my example - but I have inspected it for 10 minutes now. I would say the stock system weighs 3 times what this does. Between this and the horsepower info, it has to be a decent performance bump.

Thanks to those that held off for us new builds. Trust me - the weight (kidding) will be worth it.

hearing this testimonial a few months ago could have averted a lot of dissension about why the dual glasspack folks should change …
