Drove Nearly 5 hours to get wrong Trans.

#1

Today we drove nearly 5 hours round trip to pick up a trans for an 89 325i. When we got back we noticed that the input shaft is larger than the original trans. even thought the rest of it looks the same. NOT TO HAPPY! The seller has not returned my call yet. Any ideas? Split years? ect

Just change the flange, is the shifter the same type? The trans had a 6 month or so period where they used the larger flex coupling, it should be no problem to put your old flange on there, you azre going to replace the old rear seal anyway, right?

That’s what I was gonna say- but he said the input shaft was a different size (!!!). Never heard of that one before- unless it’s from a different car (i.e.- non-E30)…

I wondered about that but all BMW/getrag imputs are the same…

I checked the numbers on it this morning and it’s a 240… instead of a 260… Maybe it was a 318? Anyway I think the seller has it worked out for us now, so at least it will only cost a little extra time.

Plenty of other stuff that needs attention anyway.

But like Al said- (most) all BMW input shafts are the same (the clutch disc from one fits most). Are you talking about the input shaft- where the clutch fits- or the output flange- where the flex disc/driveshaft mount???

Tranny will have some numbers cast in the side of the bellhousing- starting with the tranny type (240, 260, etc).
