Instructing her in what? Not driving I assume.

According to legend, I was her instructor at RRR back when she was racing carts…she had been brought to the school by a team running what was grand am back then…there was also an infamous picture from that weekend that made it onto the cover of the Tarheel BMW mag…only Rigmaster knows what I am talking about, and hopefully all copies have been destroyed.

Lemme just say that Al’s memory is possibly clouded by the combination of CO fumes from the Stalker Van he was driving/sleeping/living/pissing in that weekend, and the sketchy sausage in the Low Country boil we had at the track Sat night. I remember the picture on the Tarheel BMW newsletter, it showed Al in his gimp suit with what he says was a “ratchet” in his pocket. All I know is that it must have been a VERY excited ratchet, either that or it was claustrophobic and trying really hard to get out of that suit. The joke at the time was that the “ratchet” was caused by the Photographer- Holly, who was our club chapter president at the time. A nice looking blond chick who drove an E30M3 on track…!!

I’ve got a copy of that newsletter around here somewhere I’m sure. I’ll scan and post if I can find it.

As for the Danica thing. All I remember is that there were some non-BMW club folks there that weekend participating in the driver’s school. Al WAS assigned to instruct some young girl who they said was being groomed to be a race car driver- but IIRC, he only did like 1 or 2 track sessions with her. I have no idea if it really was Danica or not.

What I clearly remember is Terry Borcheller being there, and obviously not aware of the rules of a DE. He was passing in turns, without a point by, tailgating, etc. He got black flagged once and came sliding to a halt on pit road, sideways, just feet from the track steward. He was also accused of giving the corner workers the finger- which he explained away by saying he was pointing at then with 1 index finger and brushing the other one across it in a “shame on you” motion. How he managed to do that at speed was never disclosed- but he’d have to have both hands OFF the wheel to do what he said he was doing.

Since then, I’ve always thought he was a douchebag.
