Cough, cough, Excuse me, I just choked a little

Well, Sunday’s race was interesting.

Carlton started on the pole, like on Saturday. I was second on the grid, beside Carlton.

Chris Cobetto got his usual good start and "helped" me along a little as we got past Carlton, due to his having a trouble finding second gear. David Herrington got a good start and came up beside me. We drove the first 5 turns side-by-side. We both gave a little room at each turn and never touched. After turn five, I had a slight advantage and pulled ahead.

After several laps of leading, and seeing Chris go off at the turn-in for 7 due to his foot slipping of the brake pedal and onto the accelerator, I had a semi good lead. Up to that point, David and Chis had been battling hard which gave me a little breathing room.

After a few more laps, and seeing David and Carlton staying about the same distance back, and knowing they were probably going through the last turn (fast, forth gear, down hill, double apex, right hander) quicker than I, I got a little greedy and went off…with two laps to go. It wasn’t an out-of-control carzy-spin but I could see that I was going off and drove it off to the left and into the open grass area.

After keeping it straight and under control, and seeing David and Carlton go by, I got back onto the track in a controlled way and followed them to the checker.

That’s the first time I’ve lost the lead due to a driving error and it was tough to keep my cool for the remaining two laps. However, I knew the car was fine and I wanted to keep it on the track. Plus, Carlton and David drove very well and they had stayed with me for the entire race. It certainly wasn’t "in the bag" and I had to keep driving hard. But it’s definitely a lesson learned.

And overall, it was a fun weekend hanging out at the track and racing with my fellow Spec E30 racers.

Wouldn’t that be "hog-tied"? :silly:

I think it would be…

Steve, did you fix the fan?

No, add that to the list of things to do before Mid-Ohio:

  • Aux Fan
  • Alignment
  • Non-Plastic Catch tank for coolant (see below)
  • Batteries for SI board

For those of you going to Nationals, find a non-plastic alternative for your catch tank (read no Aquafina bottles). When I went to the Ohio/IA race, they did a tech inspection and told me the bottle would have to go.

I will let you know what I put together so the rest of us who have water bottles can replace them.

What about an old brake fluid can; would that work, instead?

There are alot of energy drinks out now that have a metal can with a screw on top. I think one of them is called "Full Throttle" or some such. ‘Catch Can’ jumped to mind the first time I saw someone drinking one!

I think we have hijacked Carter’s original post… sorry. So what’s wrong with the catch container that came on the car? Does it eventually leak? Am I missing something? I am assuming you are talking about the overflow reservior for the coolant.

I was working grid/tech, thanks for putting on another good show guys! B)

Best catch can in the world???

Old fire extinguisher.

Empty it out. Just unscrew the top. Shake out all the stuff.

Light, spun aluminum…pretty color too!!

Not a problem. This helps get my mind off of losing the lead…

And it’s good that Steve brought his up. I’ll need to replace my Aquafina bottle.

To answer Ken’s question, I think the car originally vented the coolant to the ground. I think my vent tube just stuck down into a frame rail and would spew on the ground when it was a street car.

I like Ric’s idea of an old extinguisher but I don’t know where to find one…

I also want to thank Jamie for his help this past weekend. He saved my canopy frame (I still owe him lunch) during a wind/rain storm at midnight and he helped with several other Spec E30 "projects" during the weekend. Having his help was a good thing.

Yes, the vent does drain to the ground and the factory tube is stuck in a hole in the frame rail.
