Considering moving to SE30

#1

I’ve been racing in GTS2 (e36) for a couple of years. If I have to be honest, I’ve been to 1-2 events a year over the past three years with a car that just has one problem after another. What frustrates me about that series is the cost to keep up in an open rules environment. I’ve been impressed with the speed of the SE30s and think a move here might help keep me on track if I can find a reliable car and bring down my between event costs and prep. My concerns are with the announcement to start changing the SE30 cars to eventually merge them with Spec3 and the longevitity of the series. I’m also wondering what might happen with Spec e46 and if that’s the place to be. I welcome any thoughts and would love to hear about any cars that might be coming up for sale.

I started with a GTS2 E36 and saw the same thing as you: arms race, fresh fast expensive tires required every weekend, more to worry about on the car, and smaller fields to go along with it all.

The SpecE30 platform is a very fun car to drive. It’s not as precise in handling as a well built GTS car, but none of that really matters. Here’s what matters. You’ll be racing with a group of similar cars in large fields. It’s fast, and it’s fun, and when the day is done this is the best group of racers to hang out with afterwards in the paddock.

Forget about the Spec3 merger rumblings, that didn’t seem to go anywhere. SpecE46 is an up and coming class, but the cars are more expensive and they don’t yet have the fields that SE30 does.

Long story short, switching from GTS2 to SE30 is a no-brainer. You won’t be disappointed.

SE30 is definitely the way to go. The only other group with equal comeptition is thunder roadster but you have to love to crash and break shit to drive those. Spec3 seems like fun but the fields are small and SE46 is expensive by default but growing. We have the best of all worlds with ease of maintenance, relatively inexpensive consumables, cheap repair parts and awesome competition. Plus almost none of the drivers are assholes and those who are are still pretty cool.

I was thinking of that and then realized I needed to get my medical updated and license renewed so that’s going to take a couple weeks. I’m hoping to get to VIR for the May races and have my e36 for some much needed track time.
