clarification wrong in Frequently asked questions

#1

Hello, I am fairly new to this website. While I have been browsing it for a long time this will be my first post. I was looking through the “Getting Started” frequently asked questions page and noticed under the question “Where can I find a car for spec e30” that the description of an lsd appears to be wrong.

The description is as follows:

“jack up the rear of the car so both wheels are off the ground, spin the rear wheel with your hand if both wheels turn the same direction it is an open diff if they spin in opposite directions it is lsd.”

My experience is opposite. Cars with lsd both wheels will spin the same direction and cars without it will spin opposite. If I am wrong in this, my apologies.

I have heard of these methods for checking for an LSD on various cars, and it always seems to be different as to how the wheels should act from car to car. I haven’t checked my car though to verify if this is correct or not.

Honestly, I have never done this method on a Bimmer. However I have built several Jeeps Porsches, Hondas, etc. and the way I have always checked is if both wheels spin same direction then locked or lsd and if they spin opposite then open.

LSD car will spin same direction

…with the trans in neutral. Any diff will spin the wheels opposite if it’s in gear. The LSD will be much harder to turn, but it will still act the same.
