So I assume cutting the pipes right past the x-over and right past the cat & replacing with a straight-pipe is the way to go, then. It’s on my winter-project list, at least.

Steve, I’m guessing you mean: cut past the x-pipe and before the cat.
This is the setup that all the horsepower frontrunners were running.
Straight pipes with glasspacks all the way back from the x-over.
With my stock muffler, I was down some 10-12 HP!!!

Oops - I’d meant to post this under your Exhaust Q thread, but accidentally hit "create new topic" instead of "reply".
I’d actually meant cutting out the cat only and replacing with a couple pieces of pipe, while leaving the stock muffler in place. I thought the general consensus was that there wasn’t much - if any - power to be had south of the cat? A 10-12 hp change caused by the muffler sounds like quite a bit for the little M20 motor. I don’t mean to sound like I’m doubting you, I just hadnt’ heard that big of #'s for a muffler replacement before.
I’m considering throwing on a Flowmaster muffler, but would rather avoid the extra work & cost if it wouldn’t get me much.

Steve,
Check out the dyno thread, you will see that Carter, Carlton and Alex are all making 10-15 hp more than Vic and I. The only difference between our setups are the exhausts.

Holy crap! I hadn’t read through that thread. Guess maybe its time to open up the exhaust. Plus, as they say, a race should sound like a racecar.
Steve,
Before seeing the dyno sheets, I would have agreed whole-heartedly with you.
When Alex picked up a couple of cherry bomb exhausts at Pep Boys to fab his exhaust, I was VERY skeptical. The whole time I’m thinking: you’re gonna use mufflers from Pep Boys???!?! - but his power numbers don’t lie. The good news is that an effective exhaust is cheap. I think Alex paid $20 for glasspacks, and another $200 or so for a muffler shop to do the rest.
Anyone dyno cats only?
That is what I am running. NO mufflers. Sounds fine. No idea on HP.

Just out of curiosity, how loud are these things - with glass packs or straight pipes? I think I’m going to need some kind of muffler, just so that I don’t wake up my neighbors when I get back from the track on Sunday nights.
The glasspacks are freaking loud - straightpipes are even worse. Carter went to glasspipes (from straigh-pipes) after he was black-flagged at summit for noise. It will SOUND like a racecar with these bad boys on.
Cats only allow you to soft pedal it around town and draw very little attention.
Of course WOT it rips…
