Car # 105 "Blue Angles" Rebuild

#1

Gents,

Though some of you might be interested in following the progress of my off season rebuild.

Since the gentleman in the widebody M3 decided to make some cosmetic changes to my otherwise pristine race car I figuered it was time for a change. And since I was going to have to do the bodywork and paint anyway now’s a good time.

Car goes into the shop this friday. Bodywork and 3 Stage paint are the plan. Color is going to be blue angles blue and the graphics and #'s will be in bright yellow.

I’ll post more as the project progresses

Good Idea for the rebuild, That should look sharp. Just no canopy to canopy racing

Car went in for Paint and Body work TODAY. I’ve enclosed a rough sketch of what it will look like after. The blue will be darker though.

Car is back from paint…add one more very colorful car to the Spec E30 Line-up. Numbers and vinyl should be done in a few weeks.

looking good - what does a repaint like this typically cost?

Bruce,

There are guys who have had their cars painted for less than $400 at peachtree auto in raleigh. Although with paint, The difference in price is the labor and quality of materials used. You could spend as much as several thousand for a show quality paint job.

I took my car to a friend who usually does high-end paint and body work. Porsche’s and Ferrari’s primarily. He did the car as a personal favor to me and as a cash only job. First I stripped the car just to save time. After dropping it off they got busy sanding, and filling any dents or low spots. After that, the car got a 4 stage paint job. (primer, base, clear, and sealant). As for the materials we decided to go with an Audi blue. This paint + Clear was not cheap and cost much more than the typical stuff most race paint uses. The grand total for paint and reassembly was $1000. . The body work that was required from my last race (don’t ask…its a sore subject) was an additional $400. When it was all said and done, I have a really nice albeit not perfect paint job that should last for years.

This should give you some idea of the price range. $250 rock bottom to $1500 for a really good job. The difference in price is the labor and quality of materials used.

Hope this helps

Carter,

Yes!..I plan on being at VIR for the Endro. Speaking of the enduro, I’ve got a couple of questions that I hope you wouldn’t mind answering…I have’t been able to make any of the previous 3 hr endros due to work commitments. So I’m an enduro rookie.

  1. Do you use a co-driver or drive the entire 3 hr stint yourself?
  2. Tires; wil one set of shaved toyo’s make it the entire 3 hours?
  3. How many fuel stops. If I had to guess I’d say 3-4? but I really don’t know.
  4. Pit crew; I’ve got a few guys lined up to help. How do we get pit boxes?

Thanks
