Buttonwillow 6/9-10

#1

Any of the CA folks going to make it to Buttonwillow in June? If so, I was wondering if you might want to / be able to slip Mills a $20 & bribe your way into the BMW CR race rather than running with the miatas & hondas in the "mutt" racegroup.

Just a thought…

Steve

I thought about asking Ryan to place the Spec e30 with the BMW CCA race, but there might be some issues with the racers and/or sponsors.
I’ll ask, but I don’t mind running with the "mutts" since I have friends in there already.
I just realize there is no BMW CCA race that weekend.

#3

BMW club classes run by itself, NASA classes (SPec E30) run in a separate group.B)

#4

Yeah, I asked Mike Mills about this also. Due to a change in the setup this year there’s a definite line between NASA’s racegroups & CCA, whereas last year is wasn’t such a big deal. Oh well, I guess I didn’t quite think this through before suggesting. :pinch: I guess I could just race in both… :woohoo:

#5

I’ll be there both days in HPDE 3. Probably driving a Mustang but I might have my E30 ready by then. I’ll be sure to drop by and say hi to any SpecE30 racers I see.

#6

Hmm, maybe I should have waited a week longer. I already run this past Sunday with Speed Ventures.

There’s a domestic law against it, set by the wife…

I’d be in HPDE 1 or 2 anyway (done 13 track days, but never ran with NASA before).

I guess we are losing the battle then.
C’mon guys, what’s this new thing "let me ask my wife"?
I guess Hillary will be the next president then.
Glad to finally meet you Steve, and Chris.
Steve, next time I’ll ask you how to "properly" take the star mazda turn.

"Completely sideways" is my usual answer to how to take 75% of the corners at Buttonwillow. :woohoo: (I don’t tell my student that, though. :frowning: )

Then, I need to work on the other turns since this is the only one I took like that:angry:

Race report? Lap times and course config? Inquiring mind wants to know

I love sliding into Lost hill in CW direction.

#13

Race report? OK.
I was the fastest in practice, qualified first, and won the race, both days. I was the only one:P
Raced the CCW 13 configuration (star mazda gave me nightmares) Saturday was sunny, 99 degrees. Sunday was partially cloudy, 95. Many, I mean, MANY race incidents during practice, quali and racing, off course. The race directors were upset. There was even and incident in the first lap out during practice, some guys are just not patient. I had to drive off the track to avoid hitting any of the four cars, two of them facing each other, after magic mountain.
Here is a pic of the start on Sunday, notice the yellow CRX facing incoming traffic.

My best time was on Saturday, 2:27.245, but I know I need to learn a lot more, only my second race weekend, and my fourth event with this car.
Here is the link to the race results so the times can be updated in records section.

You may have been the only one, but win is a win. Congrats!

The picture sure ain’t pretty…on the first lap, and on the first turn, even!!

Have you ever tried #13 CW? It’s so much better than CCW especially in momentum cars between cotton corners and magic mountain (aka Lost hill).

#15

Congrats on your win!

Race Group B is kind of odd: Big mix of cars. I didn’t realize that H4 (Honda Challenge 4) had so many fast cars (i.e., fast CRX’s).

Regarding the above picture. That reminds me of the final Group B race at Cal Speedway this year. Several cars got taken out (including an E30 M3) on the first or second lap.

Ooh - I missed the start of your race on Sunday. Looks like it didn’t go so well for a few of the cars.

I ended up in the dirt myself on turn #1 of the BMW club race. We went into the turn too many-wide, and I got pushed off on the outside. No harm done, but lost several slots. My tires REALLY went off after a couple laps (first time trying out Nitto nt-01’s), so I would have lost them anyways. Still managed to bring in the win in KP (2 cars total).

I actually prefer ccw at Buttonwillow in general. I really dislike the buttonhook in this direction, but it’s so slow that it doesn’t matter. Tallageda / bus stop are too fun going ccw. I’m going to try to get some video up tonight from the race.

Victor - are you going to Willow next month? I’m 80% sure I will be there. If so, I’m planning on signing up for HPDE 4 in addition to the racegroup so that I can give a friend of mine a couple of rides around the track. I’d be happy to take you out for a session if you’d like - I have well over 1000 laps under my belt at wsir & am pretty familiar with getting an e30 around that track.

I like CCW as well, it seems more natural, and I feel better jumping magic mountain going ccw.
Steve, yes, save me a spot for WS so you can show me around, I know I can get faster and closer to the slow H4 cars. Specially turns 3-4 and 9. Got video?

#18

Yep - I’ve got videos, just need to upload them. I’ll try to get some up from this weekend at Buttonwillow & some from Willow Springs as well, and post the links here.

Willow Springs is an interesting track because your laptime there is 90% determined by how fast you’re willing to try to take turn 9. Unfortunately, I think I’ve only done it close to right twice, in 1000+ tries (not a very high pecentage  ).

From this last weekend, Saturday race going CCW at Buttonwillow. Watch the while JS car’s attempted pass at 5:45 (watch my mirror before & after). Also, I ran a bit short on talent at the very end.

From last spring, one lap in the enduro race (before sunset) going CW at Buttonwillow. One nice thing about miatas - they make nice picks!

From Willow Springs last spring, in the "racegroup B" race. No very many fast cars here, which makes me look better. This was the first race of the season last year, so I was just playing it safe. I did seriously consider giving that CRX a little push at the start, though!! Who could’ve blamed me??
