Anyone here talked to Chris Schimmel lately?

#1

I’ve been trying to contact Chris Schimmel (Competition Cages) via email and phone for several days and he has not returned my calls. I thought some you the SE30 guys might be talking to him about building a cage.

He built my cage last year and I thought I would see if he would weld up a tire rack for my trailer. Anyone have a suggestion for a metal shop/welder to do this?

He is currently finishing my cage as we speak…I know he is pretty busy right now with getting my cage done and then he is doing JP’s cage (155///MPH) to get us ready for the comp school in Feb at VIR so Im sure he will get back to you when he can. It usually takes me a day or two to get a call back as well.

Thanks for the info. I’m sure he will drop what he’s doing to get my tire rack done. It shouldn’t take more than a week or two. I know you guys won’t mind waiting.

Ken,

I was taliking to JP about getting Chris to do a tire rack for me as I tried to figure out a trailer budget. JP said Chris had quoted him a price of $400-$500 for the tire rack, which we both agreed really meant he wasn’t too interested in fabricating one as this price seemed really high compared to his price for a custom 8-point cage. It seems he’s "full up" with cages–his primary interest.

Sasha,

Thanks for the information. I kind of figured that since Chris has not gotten back to me yet that he is really not interested or is just too busy at the time. I have a few other options to get it done much cheaper (I hope). One option includes me renting a welder and learning how to weld but I think either Brett Luter or my wrought iron fabricator would be a better decision.

I made my own and I can’t weld very well although getting better. Buy a 110 volt wire feed mig welder and some flux core wire and give it a shot. Some old angle and pipe is what I made mine out of. I made it removable as I use the trailer for other things then just towing a car.

Just to add some perspective, I was quoted $400 for a tire rack by my trailer builder as well.

I was able to get some pieces of 80/20 quik-set along with the needed clamps and piece together the following rack for free…

Thanks for all of the responses and suggestions.

Chris did email me and as suggested he is very busy building cages. His guestimate for my tire rack was $350 to $400 and my metal fabribating specialist said he would do it for $50 plus material. I give him alot of business so its really a special deal he is offering me.
