And so it Begins, 2 new spec e30s

#1

Well I bite the bullet and picked up my donor car for spec e30. After watching the close racing at CMP in person I decided this was my way back into racing after running my e36 IP car 2 years. The good thing is that I bringing a buddy along for the ride. he picked up his donor car yesterday.

Mine is an 89 325i with 117k and an automatic tranny that is broken. The only other flaw with the car is a broken rear passenger quarter window. Body is perfectly straight with a few dings and no rust anywhere. The paint is in relaly good shape and just needs to be buffed out. First project is to swap in a 5 speed and an LSD 3.73. The best part of the whole thing is that I only paid 650.00 for the car. :woohoo: When he said he would take the 650.00 I gave him the cash, got the title and hauled ass out there before he could change his mind. here are some pics.

Here is the other car owned by my buddy Steve. His is also an 89 325i. It only has 41K on the clock and he got it for 2500.00. The car needs paint as it sat outside its whole life but other than that its a great car. We plan to get started stripping soon and hope to make a race by the end of the season. As you can see from his garage this guy is a car nut, the 930 in the back ground only has about 30K on it and the cobra replica has over 450hp. New z06 will be in 3 weeks.

Damion and Gasman, congratulations! It will be great to have others to race in the Southeast. The taxi cab car and its driver, Wildon DeTrack, stand ready for the challenge. In the meantime let’s get started on the cars. Let me know when you’ve got 'em stripped and we’ll get BJ at Robinson to do a two-for price on the cages.Oops… I’ve lost your number, call if you get a spare minute,770-886-2500. Oh yeah, I’ve got lots of FREE rear windows (not a real high-demand part, hence the free price tag), so come and get it. Regards, Robert Patton

Welcome to the group, guys.

You’ll love Spec E30.

#12

Yes, it’s good to have you guys here.

Keep us all up-to-date on your progress.

Thanks for the welcome guys. The car is pretty much ready to go to the cage shop. Damion and I are almost to the same stage of demolition. Does anyone know if the sheet metal that would house the retracted sunroof can be cut out? I’d like to have my cage welded as close to the interior roof line as possible. Removing that sunroof housing would allow 2" additional headroom.

9.3.13.23. The sunroof cassette mechanism may be removed so long as a replacement panel is either securely sealed (welded/bonded) or secured in place with retaining clips as specified in the CCR.

The way I read this, you can remove any part of the sunroof mechanism, so long as it is ok with NASA’s CCR.

Cut it out! My cage builder cut mine out and it’s heavy as hell–not the place you want weight in the tippy top of the car. There are some rubber drainage hoses that caught fire, though. It wasn’t a raging fire–just a slow smouldering one he didn’t notice for a couple of minutes, but it was enough to bubble up the paint on my roof in a couple of places. No biggy since the paint sucks, but be careful.

Thats what I wanted to hear…thanks.

there are three brackets on each side the you can cut through. The rest is bonded, but if you get lucky like I did, a good part of that adhesive lets go really easily.
cheers,

A little update. After a weekend of work my car has made a lot of progress. With tons of help from fellow spec e30 racer Robert Patton, soon to be e30 racer Chuck Taylor and another good friend Scott Montana my once automatic car is now a 5 spd. We also got the suaspension finshed except for the Ireland camber plates which are still on back order. I still have tons of work to do but I might actually make the VIR race and will for sure be at Road Atlanta. here are some pics of the cage.
