325is front lip and rear trunk spoiler

#1

If I build a 325i coupe for se30, how hard is it to find the 325is front lip and rear trunk lip pieces? Pricing?

Thank you.

The online catalog at realoem.com can help you find part numbers. Assuming we are talking about a small bumper car…

trunk lip - part #51711945710 $161 at Pelican
chin spoiler - part #51711968488 $153 at Pelican

Get on Bf.c and tell folks you want a trunk lip fro someone parting out their car. They’re common.

I might have one. I’ll check tonight.

Thanks guys, that got me answers quickly.

#5

are there any other drawbacks to using a 325i coupe chassis versus a same model year 325is chassis?

Most but not all “is” had the right 3.73 LSD diff. Some “i” had it, depending on the options chosen. Therefore you need to check to see if the diff is right, otherwise it shouldn’t matter.

The easy way to check the diff is to lift the rear wheels. With an LSD diff if you spin one wheel with your hand the other wheel should spin in the same direction. Hopefully I don’t have that backwards.

Alternately, with the car in neutral spin one wheel and attempt to turn the other. If it’s hard to spin it’s LSD.

Also, the diffs came with a silver tag held on by the upper passenger side rear cover bolt (IIRC). Assuming nobody put a fake tag on it, the diff tag should be stamped with “S 3.73” if it is the correct ratio and is limited slip. You may have to scrape 20-25 years worth of grime off to read it though.

Get the right ratio. You’ll never live it down if you don’t.

Thats backwards you want them to spin in opposite directions for an LSD. Same direction = Open diff.

Are you trying to confuse people with mis-information? Good strategy for slowing down the newbies.

With the trans in neutral they’ll go opposite with an open diff and the same rotation with an LSD.

now that I am thoroughly confused on how to check for an LSD…

Is diff, front valence, and rear trunk lip the only things most likely missing from an “i” car?

#11

The wheels will definitely spin the SAME direction with a LSD.

The spoilers and LSD are the only diffrences between the two…

I must have it backwards then, the getting started faq will have to be updated, sorry about that.

What is the general consensus on which bumpers to run; plastic or metal?

Where’s the best (cheapest and still fit) place to buy them?

#14

For our purposes, yes. The is had stiffer springs, sport seats, 14" basketweave wheels, and an M-Tech steering wheel. All of these will be replaced on a racecar.

Metal bumpers will always be cheaper since no one likes them.

Lots of good discussion on this thread:

Finding part-out cars on forums it probably your best bet. Better yet, whenever someone is selling plastic bumpers, jump in and offer to buy whatever diving boards are being replaced. Often, they are just thrown away.

I had to replace my rear diving board last month, and I found a guy on e30tech that sold me two of them with bumper shocks/brackets for like $80 shipped. I like the metal bumpers better.
