318is

#1

After searching, I found in older posts that a couple folks had planned to build 318is M42 cars to SE30 specifications (from what I gathered, MwMills and Robweenerpi).

Has there been any progress on this? Any worthwhile data comparison or tracktime against 325i cars?

I believe there is not enough of a weight advantage for the 318is’s (although understandably so; considering the weight of a cage, excessive/costly measures might be needed to get a 318is to a weight that is competitive with the 325i’s).

I’m just looking for general insight from anyone who has tried out the 318is SpecE30 setup.

Thanks in advance,
Stuart McHenry

318is will be perfectly competative just the way it is. I doubt a weight change will be needed. We’ll see how much that changes in true race trim but I have no reservations about finishing my car off.

I wouldn’t bother…Too many 325i’s out there to mess with a 4 banger, not to metion resale value…but over to you.

This was in a post from last year, in case you hadn’t found it:

[quote]This last weekend I had the opportunity to have a very good driver run the SpecE30 prepared 325 and the 318 to do a comparison/evaluation. The driver was Tim Barber who just won the GTA Series Championship portion of the Trans-Am series, has won a Formula Car championship and runs in both the Western States Sprint Car Championship and the USAC Silver Crown Championship.

Using Buttonwillow configuration #25 which rewards power:
SpecE30 325 - 2:11.8
SpecE30 318is - 2:13.0

Tim also said he thought there was another second in the 318is but he had to contend with traffic.

My conclusion, our formula works for both models.

I can’t wait to see one run. I am a huge fan of the 318i/is. Only reason I didn’t build mine was weight…I am not so light myself and had a couple more pounds to play with in the 325.

I know the 325s will see lots of 318 trunklids on the way into the corners!!!
