2008 Rules, round 2

#1

I just noticed that an update of the 2008 rules has been posted dated 1/9/2008

Attached is a redlined version compared to the 2007 rules.
A number of errors that were pointed out in the first round haven’t been fixed, and there are some updates to the exhaust and tire rules (I’d like to see an explanation of the tire change …)
9.3.12.8. Balancing of the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate assembly is
balancing, the flywheel must be within factory specifications.
I assume this effectively bans lightweight clutches as well. Is weight considered a specification?

it says that after balancing, the flywheel must be within factory specs so I don’t read that as affecting what you do with the clutch.
9.3.12.8. Balancing of the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate assembly is permitted. After
balancing, the flywheel must be within factory specifications.

Rob, If you are going to quote a rule, you should include the entire rule. The rule you are quoting says that “Balancing of the flywheel/clutch/pressure plate assembly *(IS PERMITTED)After balancing, the flywheel must be within factory specs.” I do not read that light weight clutch assembly’s are banned but I would assume light weight flywheels are…and always have been.

*(ommited words)

I know lightweight flywheels are banned, as is shaving a single mass flywheel down to save weight.

The clutch is also rotational mass and thus just as important. Even more important really because a LTW clutch is twice as expensive as a LTW flywheel.

Spec Miata allready went through a LTW clutch phase and we should take a page out of thier book.

On the Phil’s Tire Service website the shaved RA-1s and Shaved 888s are the same price. Full tread depth 888s are $5 less than RA-1s. Not that it makes a big difference to those of you with 12 RA-1s in the garage.

interesting that there is no legal tire until 6/2/08 in the latest revision…says you must use r888 as of 6/2/2008 but there is no mention of what you can use up to that date…
9.3.9.1. As of June 2, 2008 the Toyo R888, size 205/55/14 or 205/50/15 must be used in
competition. The Toyo RA-1 may still be used in practice or other non competition
sessions.
shouldn’t there be some sort of section stating what tire(s) can be used from now to 6/1/08? or is the wording “The Toyo RA-1 may still be used in practice…” enough to imply that RA1’s can be used for qualifying and races up to 6/1/08? are the r888’s only allowed as of 6/2/08?
