1983 318 not classed?

#1

I am thinking about getting into e30’s and have found a goos base car, but I don’t see it in the classes. It is an '83 318i, the classing starts with '84, do I need and '84+?

Thanks for helping the newb

Well the 318 would be classed in SU which is the class that is being eliminated.

Glad I asked!

Is everything going to be classed SO then? Where can I go for a current list of legal vehicles, and class?

Thanks,
Donnie

Print and keep the rules close at hand.

page 16

SO class consists of:
325i and 325is 1987-1991
325i Convertible 1987-1992
318i,is,ic convertible 1990-1991

So you want to avoid early 318’s and any E motored car to stay out of SU.

No one I know of is building a convertible…but it might be fun.

A few 318i,is are being built now. I have one that is not going to be a spec car, but will be a track car eventually.

These are the M42 motored cars. 16 valve, chain drive cam, forged crank.

This motor was used, in a version known as the M44 in the 318ti and the Z3 and E36 318i,is,ic . It was only used in the 1990 and 1991 318’s. It is a very well built, near indestructible motor.

It will be interesting to see if the 150 lb weight reduction (2600 with driver vs 2750 with driver) and shorter gearing will be enough to make up for the lack of torque and HP. I’ve owned both and driven each on track, but not at the same level of prep and I think the 325 will be faster for the average guy. The 318 won’t be tolerant of sloppy mistakes but may rail through corners and be better under braking. Enough to stay ahead of the torque on corner exit???..we will see one day. May be a bit like the challenges we faced with miatas.

Enjoy the hunt and the build!
