Is it legal to use a couple of the large Zip ties to anchor the battery?
The rules say no bungee or rubber cords. I gather that a couple of zip ties would suffice as a short term solution.

I would not think that those industrial-size ties would pass the test.
I’ve got a nylon holddown strap wrapped around the battery with the hooks anchoring through some holes that I drilled into the trunk area. So far, so good.

Gotcha. I was just looking for a short term solution for this weekend to try and knock this out faster.
I bought a length of drilled flat metal strapping in the metal department at Lowes or HD. The stuff about 1" wide with a hole spaced every inch or so.
I bent this into roughly an inverted U on the vise and bolted the right side below the battery tray mounting bracket, looped across the battery caps and the left side is bolted to the raised lip on the trunk floor.
Took about 15 minutes to bend/install.
My quick and dirty method was to use the wedge out of my z71 pickup’s battery tray with a long screw from autozone. To ensure it didn’t work its way out I used the hold down strap that they sell and the 10 inch rods. One rod went through a hole I drilled in the outboard side of the battery tray. The other went through the plastic cap on the trunk floor throuh a rail. I’s super sturdy and I didn’thave to frabricate anything- a concern I had due to time constraints. Got me on the track!
I used the metal strap method first, and didn’t like it. I got a metal universal battery holder from Autozone, and it was too big. Finally, I got two universal plastic holders, and attached the provided bolts to the tray with washers to reinforce the holes, and drilled two holes on the left side lip. Bolted down, and the sucker doesn’t move. Took me longer than expected.
I don’t know why the cars don’t come with a tie-down already.
