We haven’t had an oil thread in a while.

The article is so bad I’m ashamed to admit that I sent Blackstone an oil sample today.

Here’s some real info. http://www.lnengineering.com/oil.html There are links near the bottom of the page that need to be read too.

agree… nice attempt but pretty pathetic as to how he came to the conclusions.

Been thinking about this oil deal…

A number of years ago I was driving for a team that had Torco fuel & lubricant sponsorship.

I sent a note to their tech dept yesterday asking about the ZDDP levels and received this reply:

“ZDDP avg is 1350 ppm for all products, Zinc additive will add another 450 ppm to each 6 qts”

I know that we had good success running their products in the past in a 2.5 litre, 12.1 comp, 7700rpm motor.

Torco through Mission Performance Products offer a decent NASA/SCCA discount.

I’m not affiliated in any way nor have any connection to either Torco or the vendor. Just putting this out as another source.

I needed a fuse and was at the PepBoys today. I noticed Castrol had a 20-50 Syntec on the shelf. I took a closer look as synthetic 20-50’s are harder to find these days. It said specially engineered for clasic cars. I read that as cars with solid lifters and maybe extra ZDDP.

I found this on the their site:
http://www.castrol.com/castrol/genericarticle.do?categoryId=82915470&contentId=7032644

So it may have a good amont of ZDDP but I could not find any hard numbers on their site. It did have this:

  • Contains increased zinc levels for extra engine wear prevention.
    • SYNTEC 20W–50 does not meet the catalyst compatibility requirements of vehicles manufactured since 1993.

So this could be a good option for those that want to drive to a store to get oil vs mail order and stocking up. I will try to call Castrol next week and get some more details on ZDDP levels. I don’t have much faith I will get anyone on the phone that can answer that questions though.

Castrol does not publish detailed specs on their oil. And they were the ones that made the use of the word “Synthetic” meaningless in the US oil market. My perception that oil gurus distrust and dislike Castrol.
