WTB: M42 engine (i.e. from swap)

#1

I bought a 1991 318i with the intention of doing HPDE but chain slap seems to have claimed one of the chain guides (and a rod bearing in the process) while driving down the highway. A friend of mine who bought a completed Spec E30 suggested I post here to see if anyone had started their project with a 318 and wanted to sell the engine. Plus, I figure some of you may know where stuff like that is sitting anyway.

Already checked with Strictly German near RA and Ken Baker in Marion…no luck on an E30 M42.

Thanks!

I have an M42 with ~200k miles and a broken crank position sensor (crank, but won’t start). I live in GA, but may be able to deliver the engine if the location was right (I travel a lot).

Where are you at and would you be interested?

I live in Florence SC, quite a drive but I’m up in Anderson SC a lot. I drive literally hundreds of miles most weekends so driving to you or meeting up shouldn’t be a problem.

I would assume there’s no reason I couldn’t use my crank sensor? Any ideas on the condition of the rest of the engine…oil consumption, chain tension, sprocket condition, lifter noise, etc? Anything major replaced in the past (particularly timing)?

I’m checking out a 150k junkyard engine on Friday, but if it’s sketchy I’ll probably be back on here.

I’m not 100% of the state of the sensor. The last time I looked at it (about 6 months ago) there was a problem with how it was mounting. I’ll have to take a look at it again to check it’s state.

As for the state of the engine, it ran very well. No smoke or burnt oil. The tensioner had been done at around 170k miles by the previous owner. I don’t know about the sprocket. The clutch was all but gone on the car. Nothing (from my research on the car) indicates anything in the engine was replaced.

This weekend I’ll see if I can get some pictures and crank it again to give you a better idea of the state of the engine. Thank for the reply though!

Thanks for the input everyone, but I’ve bought an engine. I’ll be back if I find it’s a dud when I install it…
