I was thinking about buying the IE 25mmF and 22mmR sway bars, but I realize that I would have to have another set in order to participate.
So why can’t the regulations be changed to bigger sway bars?
Jeff
Why 22mm Front and 19mm Rear Sway Bars?
I am a new guy around here and I have no idea what the background of the rules are, but I can make a few guesses.
Why not 22mm all the way around or 30mm F and 20mmR?
Frankly the rules have to be set somewhere and that somewhere was set on what was most popular, available and cost effective.
I would not hold your breath for this rule ever to be changed as it is working nicely for the group.
Just my 2 cents.
And like I said I am just guessing.
Probably because those sizes were common and affordable. I find that the package works very well, and I think most others agree. No need to change it.
There would really be no benefit to using a 22mm rear bar. Some guys have actually disconnected the rear bar altogether. Since you have not purchased the sway bars yet, why not get the 19mm bars and be legal?

You guys really run with no rear bar!? That’s surprising to me. I was forced to run with no rear bar and a 22mm front one day at CMP after a mount broke and I couldn’t get the car to do anything on turn-in and in transitions. I was on street tires though.
As for the OP, I’d say they went with 22/19 because those sizes were readily available from Suspension Techniques and IE. And I don’t think they’ll be changing it anytime soon!
I thought we have to run swaybars… doesn’t disconnecting the rear count as if you are not running a rear bar? Rule clarification?
Stu,
I ran the M3 with Grp N springs, Bil Sports (not revalved) and stock front bar / no rear bar; it was absolutely perfect… I was running Hankooks.

Hey Mike,
Good point on the rules clarification. I see how a rear bar would not be needed and is just added weight with a Grp.N/J-stock setup but I don’t think the H&R Race has enough spring rate to do that. The rear swaybar gets worked a lot with these springs; just ask my rear upper mounts.
BTW, are you building a spec car?!
Stu,
That is a very true statement in regards to the spring spec not having the rates to run w/o a rear bar…
In regards to your question…

There may be a couple of podium finishers who will beg to differ…
Scott,

I think there is a need for rule clarification; As long as the rear bar is there but disconnect, is the ‘legal’ ? Or does the rear bar need to be connected.
I do agree that with the power/weight ratio; running w/o a rear bar would be better… at least with my previous experiences.
This has been covered. Same as with ABS. You must have it connected and functioning. If you don’t, you are not running a legal setup.

Interesting, perhaps one of my issues with no rear bar was camber, I know the spec cars are running quite a bit, while mine is around -2/-2 One benefit I found with no rear bar was traction on corner exit. Major areas at CMP where the car struggled were T1 and getting the car to rotate in all the corners after the kink (old layout)

It’s easy enough to connect and disconnect… try it both ways next time your at a track.
I personally like the spec bars. And I have no problem rotating the car at CMP (just see my video for proof).
Disconnecting the rear bar is standard procedure from what I’ve seen, in the rain.
Scott, the “podium finisher” you are refering to will have his new sways on for RA after being told by another “podium finisher” that there was a lot of time lost by not running one.

Did this other ‘podium finisher’ also tell the other ‘podium finisher’ that there is a lot of time lost in not having a fresh head too.
