Which Traqmate to get

#1

I’ll hopefully be at CMP for my first HPDE on 5/1. I decided to get a traqmate so I can follow my and my car’s progress. I’ve been trying to decipher Traqmate’s website, but it looks like it was designed by someone who used to do porno websites. I want to get the data acquisition, track maps and integrated video. At the very least, I’d like to find the boobies. Which unit should I go for. Any recommendations on HD camcorders? It will be only for use in the car.

Thanks,

Andy

Call Ron Hlozansky - he has worked for Glenn (Mr. Traqmate) Stephens for years. I know they recently came out with a different video option than the ChaseCam (nice piece, but damn expensive), but I don’t know the details. You need a package that contains the display unit, sensor unit, rpm input, and video. If you really want to geek out get stuff like sequential sift lights, brake pressure inputs, etc.

Ron can help you wade through the options they have. I think it is a great system and given its ubiquity in the Southeast, it is the easiest one to trade and compare data.

Ron is at 404-520-6144.

probably overkill for your first HPDE. wait till you have the basics down so you can actually make sense of and utilize the data. you don’t need to focus on lap/sector times when your starting out. getting video on the other hand is great for looking at line, smoothness, braking/shifting technique etc.

Thanks! I’ll give him a call and see what I can come up with.

It probably will be overkill at first. One of the things I want to learn about is how the changes I make to my car affect the performance. I’ll be starting out with a pretty stock 325is. I’m very interested to see how the changes I make to the suspension, tires, etc affect the handling of the car. I will be also interested to see how my driving style changes as I (hopefully) become better.

I don’t really want to get a basic unit, only to have to trade up when I need the additional data.

i agree on not getting the basic unit. i’m just saying to hold off until your in HPDE 3. i got mine about a year ago with the chasecam integration and the dvr. since then they’ve introduced the HD model which is still quite pricey.

If you are a geek you’ll want to get set up for data sooner rather then later. There’s all sorts of ways to make it a great learning tool. By the time you’re at 10 track weekends, you’ll have skills enough such that you’ll have specific ideas on how to work on the inadequacies that your data is reporting.

There’s two ways to do Traqmate. Get the “Complete”, which is sensor and display, or first get the Basic (no display)…realize your error and then get the display. The first course of action is less expensive.

Their video product, TraqStudio I think it’s called, is very nice.

Note that there are competing products. The ICQ system, for example, is very nice in that it includes a customizeable dash, something that Traqmate is still working on. Traqmate is a good product for the price, and the most common data logger in our class.

I was going to do the same thing for our Lemons cars but with a Basic Stamp processor and an XBee Pro transmitter. Putting it together would be relatively easy. The hard part is writing software the display the data in meaningful and/or entertaining fashion. I was also going to incorporate a basic pit-car-pit communication system.

I can recommend gorman motorsports. i got my setup from there and they were very helpful with selecting the correct components.

PS - You can consider me a very satisfied customer of Traqmate, but nowhere near as satisfied as that other category of product.

I agree with waiting until you have several events under your belt. It would mostly be a distraction when you’re still working on putting together consistent laps.
