The new style, without spring, is what I believe is in my engine. Metric Mechanic uses because it has multiple sealing edges.
Either works equally well.
A main seal can prematurely fail because it is an inferior part, it is installed incorrectly, or the sealing surface on the crank shaft may be grooved. in the last case, seating the seal to other than normal position is cheaper than replacing the crankshaft.
I’ve done this job twice now and I believe that the first time was an inferior part and the second time may have been the wrong part, now that I look back at the invoice. I’m pretty sure that I installed in correctly and that I placed the seal to avoid the old groove. I’m hoping that the third time will be the charm. I’ve ordered both the old style and new style seals. Haven’t figured out which one I’ll use yet. I’m leaning towards the new style.
I’m hoping that there isn’t some sort of pressure/blow by issue. It only leaks when I push the car hard.
Pulled the trans and will replace the seal with the new style this week. Will use a light coating of Curil T or Loctite 574. Hopefully that will fix the leak for good.
I saw last one on amazon if you want to purchase new one then you can get one from there. Or one of my friend has sane old spring, if you want.
