Got the 1.5 hp 30 gal 6CFM@90 psi compressor I always wanted. Doing this build is a great excuse to do the shop. What 3 or 4 tools have you guys found most useful?
Which air tools are required?
A good impact wrench, not a cheap ass CH. I believe IR makes sears., impact rachet, 3/8 and 1/4, air hammer, I’d like to have a bunch more. Those are the tools I use the most.
An air saw can be handy. Ditto on the others - 1/2 and 3/8 in impacts and a 3/8 ratchet.
The air tools that I wind up using the most are:
Drill
Die grinder
Right angle die grinder (with a cutoff wheel)
Blow gun
Cleaning gun
I find that I prefer to use a battery operated torque wrench over my air operated one.

Wow, you must have some fancy tools. So picky that they like to consume filtered water!
I thought this was low-bucks racing, not the Porsche Club. PCA guys wash their hands with Perrier

Haaaa!! I didn’t say I had one…just he might want one…
There is a lot of water that will get in to that tank when it is humid out…
This is what Sean is referring to. I bought one to keep water out of my paint gun, but it is also a good idea for tools.

What kind of filter is this? Something on the intake side? I have an air/water separator for the tools to keep the moisture out of the tools but I am unaware of something that would help with the tank other thank opening the drain once in awhile.

Just drain it daily if you run it.
I’m shoppin’ for air tools now. On the impact wrench, what is minimum ft/lbs I should get. There’s a cheap one for $14.99 at Harbor Freight that does 250 ft/lbs torque. Is this enough? I see some with over 1000 ft/lbs over $100.
thanx,
tom

They might advertise 250 ft.lbs but you won’t get 250. I have had the $29 CH products one (in the trash), the $79 Sears (not much better) and when I couldn’t get the crank pully bolt off a car I was working on with the Sears, I borrowed the Ingersoll-Rand gun from the shop. The bolt came off with the first press of the trigger. The $79 Sears gun is barely better than my 19.2V Chicago Tools Impact ($129 at HF) which BTW has been my best purchase yet. I’ve used it for 4 going on 5 racing seasons now.
Depends on what you want to do with it. For the lugnuts, it’s only about 100ft. lbs. required anyway so the battery one works excellent. If it’s hard-core suspension and engine parts, you’ll want to spend about $150. The $15 HF one is $15 wasted.
I know we are talking about air tools here, but I just bought a 1/2 inch CORDED impact wrench at HF Tools for $39.99 on sale (Chicago Elec.) I have used it to completely redo all suspension components on my E28 and it worked flawlessly. Its not right in front of me so Im not sure of the numbers on it but It was a great deal in my opinion. Just an FYI for those of you looking into one for around the garage.
