Where can I get original electrical connectors?

I am preparing my car to get back on the track, but I have a problem. Every time I touch a plastic electrical connector, they shatter into multiple pieces. The same goes for the original wiring looms. The engine pulls strong and has been dynoed at just over 155HP. I have been told by a local, reputable, mechanic that this is just the nature of older BMW’s. Once these connectors are broken, they no longer stay in place without zip-ties and they allow water and dirt to get inside. Attached is a photo of my fuel pump that I recently replaced. You will notice that the black pump connector is broken. I know that the ideal temperature should be above 50F and to take my time, so please don’t tell be to be careful. I am. Nearly all of the connectors are disintegrating. Therefore, I have two questions:

First, is there anything I can do to prevent this?
Second, I would like to replace the connectors or wiring harnesses that show problems. Can someone recommend a good source?

Most, if not all, of the connectors are available from BMW. The trick is figuring out what part number you need to order.

What I usually do when faced with a broken connector is to splice in a good one from a scrap harness. I get the scrap harnesses from a salvage yard.
