What is the "larger front strut housing?"

#1

Can someone explain this pls?

9.3.8.13. Updated (larger) front strut housing, BMW part number 31 31 1 127 315/6 are permitted.

I think that this rule has been around for a while. I just don’t know what it’s talking about.

as far as I can tell (RealOEM.com) that’s the normal part number from 1986-1991 for the 325 so I’m as confused as you

Seems like I remember something about 318s having a narrower strut housing. Even though they are phased out, I suppose the rule still works in case someone wants to use a 318 tub?

I think the smaller struts were on the 84-ish cars.

I just wanted to clarify, that since I have a 1987 325is I have the smaller strut housings and should order part number P30-0334 Bilstein shock inserts. Thanks.

No, you should have the struts that virtually everyone else has, the later, larger struts, and will want shock insert, PN P36-0335.

Hmm that seems to contradict what I read here which is where my confusion came from:

This thread helps clear it up:

It would be nice if the rules made it simpler to understand instead of just listing 2 different part numbers for the front. Thanks for clearing it up more.

we may just remove the reference to the smaller strut housing next time. Feel free to suggest revised text for rules.

My recollection was that the smaller (45mm) strut housing was used on non-abs (early) cars.

Probably a good idea to keep the rule, but perhaps re-phrase it:

"45mm strut housings may be replaced by 51mm strut housings (BMW part 31 31 1 127 315/6)
