what does this do?

I took my subframe out to get it reinforced and notice that the #14 item in

is just sitting there. My car doesn’t have the #15 "rubber buffer" on it. What is this piece here for?

also shown as items 35/36 here:

It it supposed to be a snubber to prevent forward motion of the engine (when the tranny mounts fail) which in a stock motor setup normally results in the fan cutting the lower radiator hose, your car overheating, and the head warping.

All that being said, the CW is that it doesn’t really work all that well. I replaced the rubber snubber with a bolt/washer affair that is basically snuggled right up adjacent to the subframe to reduce the amount of forward movement (theoretically).

This problem is one reason why people generally replace the OEM motor/trans mounts with something stronger (within the limits of the rules obviously)

since I won’t have an engine fan, and will have stronger motor and tranny mounts, sounds like I don’t have to worry about this.
