What causes tranny to puke out fluid?

#1

I filled my tranny up last month because it was down about about a cup of fluid. Last night I noticed there was about that much fluid in the catch bottle that is attached to the tranny’s vent hose. This would have occured at Mid-O because I’d emptied the catch bottle prior. What do you figure is going on such that my tranny seems to prefer to be a cup low on fluid?

Some oils can froth and expand… Transmissions would eject this as the frothing and expansion occurs.

We’re using Torco in SoCal and it does seem to not foam… and get ejected.

I can put you in touch with our very knowledgable Torco rep if you want to discuss this in more technical detail. Even my Dad found him technical - Dad was an Chemical Engineer in Oil Process Design for 45 years.

Or if we’re talking Trany’s, you may have mixed Heroin with Cocaine and Alcohol.

I use AMSOIL in the tranny. I don’t know how it performs vs. others.

a slight overfill can also create this… Transmissions should never be overfilled… (just puting it out there.)

I hear ya, but I think that the quality of the fluid I’m using is good and there’s no way I overfilled it. So I still don’t understand what’s up. I suppose that it’s possible that AMSOIL tranny fluid is not idea for race cars because it has less anti-foam in it’s additive package.

Maybe other AMSOIL tranny fluid users will chime in re. their experiences.

I thought it was just a known fact that some Getrag 260s under hard cornering loads can lose fluid out the breather which is why the rule allowing catch cans was created. I hooked a catch can up to mine, and I haven’t caught a drop instead I lose it out the output shaft or shifter seal. I think the idea was that this might be an early Getrag 260 versus late Getrag 260 issue. I’m using Redline MTL in mine.

Ranger,

I agree with King Tut on this. Some cars simply loose some fluid out of the breather.Others don’t.

As you well know, I have been using Amsoil for more than 10 years in a couple of different E30 track cars with good result. My previous car leaked a little like yours does. My current car does not.

I used RedLine in the previous E30 as well with similar results.

I use OTC ATF in my tranny. Have a hose from breather to washer fluid tank for overflow. Never any ATF in the tank and no mess around the transmission. The fluid goes up the tube and then drains back down back into the transmission. Before this it was a mess. Not sure why it is making it all the way to your catch tank. I would start with switching fluids.

Scott, catch tank should be above the trans. If that does not help, loop the vent hose three times before attaching to the catch tank. CB

This was exactly what I was thinking when I put the catch can in. It’s in front of the ABS unit so I figured that the long hose would catch any fluid and it would just drain back into the tranny. It came as a surprise for fluid to make thru the ~4’ of hose and dump apprecialbe volume into the catch can.

I used MTL in the past and had to refill after every event because of the overflow. Switched to MT90 and haven’t had a problem since.
