Okay, I’m putting new rear shocks in and I find that the previous owner has tack-welded a washer on the shock rod (underneath the upper mount). I’m assuming that normally a washer rides on the shoulder of the chrome-plated part of the rod to keep the rod from being pushed up through the upper mount. But welding it in place? Is that necessary to reinforce it? It’s that way on both shocks.
Washer welded on rear shock?

I don’t know why someone would weld the washer to the strut rod. Unless maybe they weren’t the correct washer or something was funky with the strut mounts or shocks.
Welding the washer to the strut rod isn’t necessary if the correct parts are used and the shock and upper mount are correctly assembled.
the stock rear shock mounts are notorious points of failure. The Ireland ones are nice pieces. Also BMP design has some nice billet ones as well.

I had some nice billet upper strut mounts that came with my suspension kit and they wouldn’t hold the bushing’s together. I went back to the factory upper strut mounts.
