VIR Update

#1

Believe it folks…we have 18 Spec E30 cars signed up to RACE at VIR

#2

That’s awesome! What was the largest number of cars that were ever signed up for a Spec E30 race?

#3

Sean,

Is that for the enduro or the sprint races or both? Looks like Brandon is not going to be able to attend even though he registered last week. I’ trying to decide between HPDE and the Sprints.

Keith

#4

that is for Sprints and is the largest number to date. Spec E30 runs E2 for Enduro

#5

That number is assuming a good many of us pass Comp School.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Yes… Comp school  What can so of you more experienced guys tell us about the MA Comp School.

What kind of drills will we be doing on track?

What’s the written test like? What all does it cover? What’s the format?
(I haven’t taken a test in 20+ years… )

How much track time and class room time are we looking at?

JP[/quote]Here is the deal with comp school… #1 rule…do not hit anything.
You are not supposed to be the fastest car out there to pass. You will be evaluated on your ability to safely be on the track with the other cars. Keep your head together, look ahead, be very aware of your surroundings PARTICULARLY the flags/flag stations. You need to know the flags and the circumstances regarding their use both during on track evaluation and the written test. Carter will likely be one of the evaluators on the track, as will Cobetto. Don’t try to be impressive, just be consistent, hold your lines when supposed to, don’t make them think you are unpredictable. You will be fine.

Skip and I haven’t signed up yet (or maybe they’re assuming we’re comming) so that would make 20 when we get around to it.

and it’ll be 21 when I actually sign up too. How many cars are needed for a class to have it’s own run group? 25 comes to mind for some reason

I should be there as well. Not yet registered–because the car isn’t done.

#12

I will be running HPDE (car still not done, cage not here yet).
Anyone have a suggestion on the best place to watch the race at VIR? I’ve done very little spectating there.

There is usually some good action at turns 4, 5, and 6 too.

I’ll 2nd the viewing area near turns 4, 5 and 6. But there are lots of good places to watch: Oaktree, roller coaster, and NASCAR… anywhere but the front straight

If you hit another car, you will fail. If you spin once, you will probably pass. If you spin twice, you will probably fail. You will not win a trophy and Frank Williams is not there to find his next driver. Show us that you can drive quickly, but under control.

At the end, they ask us if we would want to race with you. Thumbs up or down.

You’ll get about four on-track sessions and four classroom sessions. For the test, know the flags and the CCR. The test is not real tough but you need to know the basics. It’s fun and you will learn a lot.

just 2 spins? I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to keep her under control  My spinning days are behind me…

Thanks for the 411

This is a area that is a real pet-peeve of mine. Two years ago at VIR, we were standing over by tech getting our "chewing out" by Politti about flags. So, he’s going through the flags and the debris flag comes up and the guy next to me says "so that’s what that flag is for" :frowning:

Last summer at Hyperfest, same type of "session" and the white flag comes up and some next to me says "so that’s what that flag is for".

Someone else asks if you can "pass the emergency vehicle". :frowning:

There’s less than a dozen flags, how do these people even hold a driver’s license much less a racing license. It absolutely infuriates me to hear these kind of comments because, if anything, the driver ahead of you is supposed to be "predictable", how can that be if the idiot doesn’t even know what the basic flags mean?

Another one at Hyperfest (I think), we received a "black all" and the guy in front of me stops at the tub almost causing a pile-up. He was "nervous" and forgot what he was supposed to do for a sec.

It’s one thing to not be competitive, it’s another when your lack of understanding impacts the safety of those you share the track with. I’d certainly like to see a harder test.

If someone wants to be my racing sugar momma/daddy (or just hire me), there’d be one more car in the Feb field…

… as is, I’m happy crewing the enduro (if anyone needs a hand) and taking pics.
