Valid H&N restraints

#1

I’ve been reviewing the various types of head and neck restraints. The NASA CCR require SFI 38.1 certification. I noticed that only HANS and Safety Solutions (R3, Hutchins) are listed on the SFI web site. In other words, DefNder is NOT listed, though they do state their product meets SFI 38.1 requirements. Perhaps they meet the requirements but do not carry the official certification?

Can anyone confirm if DefNder is a legal H&N for NASA?

I know Ron @ Discovery Parts sells them and never mentioned them not being okay in NASA along with multiple SpecE30 drivers using them. This page seems to clearly state they are certified and in the pictures on the first page can see the SFI tag:

They are probably not on the SFI site because they aren’t made anymore. They were SFI compliant and legal for NASA and BMWCCA CR. In the absence of an official notice from SFI re. the cert being withdrawn, they should still be compliant.

I have one and it has an SFI 38.1 tag on it. I have not seen any official notification from SFI or NASA (or BMW CCA for that matter) that states they are no longer compliant. Just used mine last weekend.

Thanks for the info. There is local shop here that has both DefNder and HANS. I’m going to take a look at both.

I must be a little behind the times. It seems DefNder went out of business about 3 months ago. The dealers nearby no longer have them.

I liked their product, particularly the ability to adjust the angle. I think HANS is what I will go with. I assume the 20º version will be best for Spec E30. I’m going to try one one today. I’ve heard they sometimes are uncomfortable over the collarbone.

If you get the upgraded pads for the HANS its very comfortable for me. Had mine for a number of years and like it.

yeah hans drove defnder under with the lawsuit. kind of a shame really. i really prefer it over a HANS. i guess i will hang on to mine until I am forced to replace it.

I did like the DefNder and was hoping to try one on in person. Alas, I purchased a HANS yesterday. It fits fine, just need to see what it is like under driving conditions.

I have the “heavy” model and it’s fine. I won’t get on track w/o one …

As soon as the green flag waves you won’t notice it.
