troubleshooting no brake lights

#1

I have no brake lights on the back of the car but the third light works fine when the pedal is depressed. The fuse checks out too. Im a little stumped because the third light works so I know the switch isnt bad at the pedal, should i be looking for something crazy off the wall or is it a simple plug under the dash?

Thanks

I’d have to look at the ETM to be certain, but memory says that there is only one wire running to the back of the car for all of the brake lights. And that it splits out at the light monitor module. That would imply that the problem lies at or after that module.

On my '88 there is a small box on the left of the trunk up near the hinge or something. It was part of the check control. While trying to loose weight this winter on the car I removed it and the rear lights quit working and the third light still did. I looked at the ETM and if you remove the box you will need to jumper some wires in the harness that is left to get them to work. I just put the box back in and all was well again.

Denny actually saved me from chasing my tail on that one.

Any way I can get a picture of this “Box”? I have two harness connectors near the left rear hinge, but there is nothing plugged into them, and there was nothing when I got the car If I have to jump wires at least its a place to start! thanks!

ps a pic would be awesome as I may have that box in box of parts.

That’s the place! Sorry I don’t have a pic, but you’re looking for a small box (Hella, iirc) that’ll accept those 2 plugs!

Well I looked in all my parts and I dont have one of those boxes, looks like I will have to make some kind of jumper for them.

You can get that part pretty cheaply from a salavge yard.
