Transmissions

4 recent transmission failures, all stuck in gear or missing a gear, what gives? Do yall have short shifters? I think the one’s wwe have had are with drivers I would consider smooth and easy on equipment…I would say if you find a trans for under $300 you had better buy it…

Shift slowly with a stock getrag.

Is shifting slowly an option given how hard these cars must be pushed to run competitively?

um, yes, how much do you think you gain by forcefully quick shifting? Depending on the track you are not going to be upshifting a huge amount per lap anyway. You don’t have to shift slowly per say but I wouldn’t force it either. Of course once the red mist sets in that might all go out the window

I agree, upshifts can be done gracefully and
you are not buying anything by "jamming" gears.

Consider the downshift right before a
turn that is just slow enough to require
a shift from 3rd down to second, hence the
downshift is required the split second before
turn in. I welcome someone to teach/
tell me how to do this shift slowly and or
gracefully given that you must match revs high in the RPM range and only late
into the braking zone. I’ll also add that all incar video I’ve saw has not shown me
how to do this downshift smoothly either.

I don’t use 2nd gear in those situations. I use 3rd gear. It would have to be a really tight corner for me to go to 2nd. Do you have a particular corner in mind?

Oak Tree at VIR comes to mind as do 12, 13, and 14 at CMP. All of these turns could potentially be taken in 3rd but often require 2nd due to traffic, equipment, or track conditions. Both Oak Tree and Turn 12 at CMP have very short braking zones which in turn gives very little time to complete a downshift. My question is how do I complete a smooth, slow downshift in those situations?
I certainly don’t want to sacrifice and abuse my gearbox if I don’t have to…

I downshift exclusively without the clutch (strictly when in my own car), and write it off as an operating cost so I can LFB exclusively. 3rd gear dogring is the first thing to go. I’m preparing to install my third Getrag 260 in 2 years. Not expensive, just labor intensive.

I take oaktree in 3rd. If traffic slows me enough to use 2nd then I have extra time to get it into 2nd (slowed by traffic), but that is the only time I use 2nd. Oaktree is difficult because you are basically turning right when you downshift so the transmission is loaded making a shift into 2nd difficult. I just choose to leave it in 3rd and carry as much speed as possible. For me the extra effort of trying to get 2nd there does not out weigh the possibility of missing a shift. I do double clutch my downshifts so it makes it a little easier to get the gear but requires extra footwork. I’m sure there are others who do use 2nd there and can explain what they do.

seems an odd strategy on first blush…
Doesn’t this upset the car on downshifts when you’re not matching revs?

You can still match revs you just don’t use the clutch.

my duhhh
shift into neutral and rev
