Trans and Rear End oil - type and capacity?

#1

We had an interesting discussion at Barber last week regarding this subject. I was told generally to use Mercon type ATF in the gearbox, never gear oil, and some 75W90 gear oil in the rear end.

First, does anyone have estimated quantities for the gearbox and rear?

As I’m looking at my collection of fluids on my shelf, I have several partial bottles of Synchromax (Royal Purple), Synchromesh (Pennzoil) and Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (Amsoil) that I would like to mix together and use up. I believe the Amsoil says that it can be used where ATF is otherwise used, but the other two do not specify. Has anyone used any kind of the Synchromex or Synchromesh in the gearbox?

I also own gallons of ATF, so I can use that if needed, but I have probably 30 dollars worth of partial bottles of Synchromax type stuff that I’d prefer to use up if possible.

For the rear, I have quarts of Mobil 1 75W90, so that should be good.

Any thoughts on all this?
