Toyo R888

James told me today that the R888 did heat cycle better than the RA1 at Sebring. Overall the tire drove about the same on the WCTC. Hopefully they’ll stay faster for a weekend longer than the RA1, so you should get more money out of them.

I am not clear when reading the current rules, when it comes to tires. Can we use the R888 from the start of the 2008 season? Or do we have to wait to June to change over? I need to buy tires and would like to get the R888 if I can…

R888’s are legal now. You don’t have to wait.

“I am not clear when reading the current rules, when it comes to tires.”

From the rules:
“9.3.9.1. As of June 2, 2008 the Toyo R888, size 205/55/14 or 205/50/15 must be used in competition. The Toyo RA-1 may still be used in practice or other non competition sessions.”

Good point. A strict interpretation of the rules would reflect no official tire until June 2nd. Do I need to keep the Toyo stickers on the car when I run the Hoosiers?

All kidding aside, I think the rule should be re-written:

“9.3.9.1. Toyo RA1 or Toyo R888 tires, size 205/55/14 or 205/50/15 must be used in competition. As of June 2, 2008, only the Toyo R888, size 205/55/14 or 205/50/15 must be used in competition.”

I see no reason for the 2nd sentence at all. In practice or non-competition sessions, I assume I could use Michelins if I wanted to - as long as I qualify and race on the spec tire.
