Totally locked steering wheel

#1

So last night I was tightening the 22 mil nut for the steering wheel when I forgot to keep the key out of the off position. Needless to say, the steering wheel locked. Normally you can jimmy the steering wheel a bit left and right and turn the key and all is good. However, it’s SO jammed that I can do neither.

Of course I have the steering column bezels off (due to a dash removal) so does it make sense to just drill out the lock? Can I just take the steering wheel off and jimmy the lock some how? I know I need to drill it out eventually anyway, is now the right time?

Thanks!

Remove the nut and relieve the pressure and you may then be able to get the wheel back off. It is easier to remove the lock with the wheel off, but it can be done with the wheel still in place.

search the forum on this issue. Others have described how to disable the wheel locking mechanism. You do not have to remove the key mechanism, just the locking pin.

Just remove the steering wheel and push in the little hex pin with the white surround. Then unlock it and remount the steering wheel. In fact, I just did it to your car and it’s fixed. One case of beer please. :cheer:
