I have a question. I am debating on moving from the 1990 ITS Miata and the 1990 Spec Miata that I have and move to the Spec E-30. I am looking at a built spec e30 legal car. It is an 1989 325is for 6,500 that was built by someone I know but was never run. It comes with an extra stock motor, trans, and rearend that are all in good working order plus 2 sets of wheel and tires. The only things it would need to be up and running would be all fluids and filters replaced, alignment, and tune it on a dyno. One other question. Can I run and adj. fuel pressure regulator or does it have to be the stock piece? If is has to be stock then that would have to changed out. What do you guys think. Like I said I know BMW’s a little but this is yalls world and you guys are the experts. Tell me what you think. Oh yeah and the car has a new paint job in and out, it is bright yellow, and a really straight body.
To Buy Or Not TO Buy
Sounds like a pretty great deal to me. If I added up what we spent to build (and rebuild) our car, I’d probably freak out. Although it was pretty fun and I learned quite a bit.
From this year’s regulations:
9.3.1.3.4 The Stock fuel pressure regulator must be used.
I think that should answer that question
Come and join in the fun!
Wow. Either there’s something very wrong with that car or you’ve found an amazing deal.
Get it checked out and go for it!
Sounds pretty promising, but you might want to print out the 2009 rules (available thru link on the left) and make sure the car is up to date. Stock FPR is just one change. If you have to swap out wheels, exhaust, etc. you might want to know that up front.
We’re all biased.
Talk to Steve DeVinney. He races both and can give you an unbiased look at both, with an emphasis on what he sees for the future. DeVinney is a class-act and is still involved with the rules process (Steve can expand on his involvement)with the Miata group.
CTaylor is right, you’ll want to look over the car for the latest and greatest specs. Is it the old Mel and Jim Meyers car?

Even if the cage is made out of muffler tubing that is a smoking deal.
For about 20% of the cost of a tub-up build. From what I’ve heard.
Seriously, if you don’t buy that car please PM me so I can. And I am not looking for another car. But at that price I can afford like 20 more sessions of marriage counseling.

PS - The E30 has ITS-Miata power with SM field sizes (at least in the Southeast). I still run both, but when I post on this board the E30 is my favorite.

Amazing. What are the chances? I didn’t think there was ANOTHER Spec E30 racer with the same name. I’ll have to meet him one day.

DeVinny = Vince Dooley poor-mouthing, yet again. Take the compliment and run with it!

Steve, do tell, which is your favorite?

Thank you. Sincerely. You have seen a lot of guys come and go and I do appreciate your kind words.
Let me preface this by saying that I’ve never driven a car on track that I didn’t want to keep lapping in (but the Panoz GT-RA came real close).
I like close racing in big packs. If there was a Spec Ram 3500 series you’d probably find my goofy ass out there wheeling a duallie. And you would STILL have a better motor. But I digress.
I like the E30 because it sounds better. I like the Miata because it corners better. I like the fact that the E30 is big enough for the seat on sliders so my wife can drive a caged car on track (and not mess up my street car).
But for me, racing is all about the people. I have made some good friends in both circles. Even though I’ve only been E30 racing since September, I already know more people in a 20 car Southeast field than I do in a 20 car Miata field.
I drove my older Miata in the 6 hour SCCA enduro a couple weeks ago. I am very comfortable in that car and can let it all hang out. Plus my co-driver had caved in the entire right side so I didn’t care if I hit anything over there.
I hope to get that comfortable with the E30, but it will take some time. If I would man up and skip work one Friday to do an enduro, I’d get enough seat time to try some stuff at speed.
But I gotta pay for this stuff somehow,
Short answer? Tie game (for now).

Thanks Guys!! I think you have all helped me make up my mind. I am going to buy it and although it wont be ready for this weekends Porsche Club event at Barbaer’s I will have it ready by the PBOC race at the end of March at Barber’s and run it then. If anyone will be attending either events drop me a line and let me know.
Mr. Junky will be at Barber with PBOC and there also be some real Spec E30 guys will be there as well (at least two).

There will be some of the SE crowd at PBOC. Scott Gress, Chi Row, and myself will be there as instructors.
my father and i will be there. he will be in the Solo DE in a 1990 M3 and I will be thier in my new Spec E30 doing both the sprint races on Sunday. Both are cars are bright yellow. This will actually be my first race ever so I am really excited and would love to meet up and chat with some folks that have the same kind of car. I just dont know anyone and always feel bad about just walking up to someone who is just trying to relax a little between run groups and races.

Walk up to them and hand them a beer, a piece of duct tape, a zip-tie, and a coat hanger. Watch how fast you’ll make a friend.
lol if only it were that simple. remember no beer at the track until all driving events are done. lol
Ranger tries to get all the new guys kicked out of the track like that. Don’t even get me started on what he’ll do to you with that other stuff. =:o
