timing belt ?

#1

I was changing the timing belt tonight,I screwed up. So now I need some info on what to do next. I lined up the marks on the cam shaft and crank, however I forgot about the 3rd pulley that sits to the top right of the crank. What does that control and how do I get it back in time? It moved some but I am not sure how much and I don’t want to do more work after I try to start it. Someone please help the newbie out.

Sean - I am sure some veteran will weigh in, but if you look at Bentley you should find your answer. I believe the third pulley is the drive shaft for the oil pump. On some european engine variants, it also was used to drive the distributor, but this is not an issue with the M20 since the distributor is timed with the cam shaft.

Ed is right - don’t worry about it moving as it drives oil pump on our US spec M20 E30 s . Check Bentley or this e30 timing belt procedure for instructions how to put timing belt, and water pump if you taken it out, back on

Ed[/quote] Thanks for the input Ed. I forgot to say what kind of car I have. It is on a 91 325I. I guess the best thing to do is to read and figure it out. I wish there were more people in the
Utah area to help out with these things? But we have to start somewhere.
