About two years ago when I first started watching Spec E 30 videos on YouTube, I told my partner Rick “we can run with these guys”. Well after we got the car built, did some testing earlier this year, and learned that I was more than 5 seconds slower than the front runners, I adjusted my expectations. Former Masters champion Mark O’Meara stated during an interview during this year’s masters “Sometimes if you lower your expectations of yourself a bit, you end up with a better result” (paraphrased). So, I came in to this year’s IFU-2 event (my first official Spec E30 race weekend) with O’Meara’s comments in mind. I no longer expected to win first time out and as a result, I had a very enjoyable event.
My strategy was to drive within my limits, find some guys about my speed to race with, stay out of the fast guy’s way, and get through the weekend with the car in one piece and no new enemies. From that perspective, tooling around at the back of the pack, keeping the car on the track, surviving the standing re-start and subsequent dust cloud and dirty track in the IFU-2, and managing to finish slightly better than D.A.L. was very satisfying.
I had a blast racing with Switzer, Childress, Foushee, Hall, Stroup, and Tripp while the other maniacs did their thing at the front. I made some rookie mistakes (Gasman, you KNOW what I am talking about) and hopefully didn’t piss too many people off. Had we been racing for $100,000 I might have done some things differently.
Having said all of that, the first weekend “nice guy” gloves are now off and at IFU-3 I’ll be gunning for you smack talking, dirt slinging front runners!!!..…Yeah Right……
Anyway, thanks to the organizers/sponsors for great event.
