You can swap a front shock at the track in an hour or two. The shock is an insert inside the strut housing, so you have to disassemble the strut to do it. If you still have stock springs, spring compressors are a must. If you pull the strut housing off of the control arm and tie rods with a pickle fork, there’s a risk of tearing one of the boots.
I don’t have stock shocks, but I do have a used spec e30 shocks/springs/camber plates kit with 4 weekends of total use on them. If you’re interested in going to spec suspension sooner, you can have the set for what I paid for it (roughly half of new).
