By the time I check the cam and push/pull the car on to the trailer and get out of town, it’ll be 10AM. That gets me to CMP at 1:30.

I imagine that all we’ll be able to do pre-enduro is to do another compression test and then get the car up on Jim’s lift.

After the enduro we’ll probably drop my motor and start putting the replacement in place. A lot of guys won’t arrive until Friday night anyhow. How far we get Friday night will depend on motivation.

Racing on Sat is unlikely, but maybe on Sunday if all goes well. And I’ll learn an assload, and it’ll be an epic male bonding event.

Wow…okay I’m late to this party, Ive been away from the 'puter for a few days.

First of all Ranger I’m very sorry to hear about this, it truly is an awful situation.

I am more than willing to help and anything I have you are free to use/borrow as needed. I have a set of flywheel bolts Ill bring just in case the ones you ordered dont show. I also have some odds and ends Ill bring too.

I wont be leaving Columbia until about 4:00 today so if you can think of anything you need feel free to call me and let me know (not you Geeger, I dont go to the kind “toy” stores you’re into)

Im sure you wont be reading this so I’ve also sent you a text.

We will get that thing back on track and you can be as slow as ever in no time! :stuck_out_tongue:

Dang what a story…

Anyone at CMP with a blackberry who can update us…?

Good Luck everyone.

At the racers meeting, there was a swarm of SpecE30 guys and two engines in the garage area. I’m not sure what the status is right now, and can’t go check since we’re about to drop the green on the Thunder Race.

#66

In between practice, qualifying, and the race, the engine swap was finished by around 4:00PM. Scott took lot of pictures and I will let him mention all the people that had worked so hard on the swap.

Unfortunately, as of 6:00PM when I left the track, the engine still would not start. I believe I heard that there was no spark.

To be continued…

P.S. - CMP once again claimed couple of Spec E30s as sacrifices during the race. I will let the parties involved relay the details.

#67

I left the track a little after 7:00, and they did have the car running. Robert Patton and Chuck Taylor did a yomans task of getting that job done. There were many guys involved that deserve credit, I’m very impressed with all of them. Good luck tomorrow Scott.

Wow ranger. Sorry to hear all this and I hope its running now…

Its sunday and still no results?!?

Seriously!?

More carnage today. Chuck Taylor and Steven Canterbury were taken out early. Some of the worst driving I’ve ever seen in my life this weekend.

Results:

B.Smith
Geiger
Schwartz
Devinney
Jones
Moberg
R.Patton
Stroup
Gropp
Foushee

edit: thought I should add that the wrecking cars were not the ones driving poorly.

#71

Excuse me!

You left out the back of the pack Steve.

I may have been last to cross the finish line, but I’m proud of it.:stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey Scott, very sorry to hear of your misfortune. Clearly this guy is a crook and should be taken to the woodshed. The motorsports community is pretty well-connected, through message boards just like this. Perhaps a little “viral” online campaign to warn off others would be a service to the community…and might just put him out of business.

The Gress motor swap saga was absolutely unbelievable. Most of the work was done by Robert Patton, Chuck Taylor and Bob Sheilds. JP and Fred also worked hard. There were a couple other guys involved in the effort and I’d be grateful if folks reminded me who they were.

Everyone worked so damn hard it was…I dunno, like something meant to reaffirm a guy’s faith in humanity. I mean those guys absolutely worked their asses off as if they were racing the clock for their very lives hour after hour. It was just unfudging believable.

We got the motors swapped in, I dunno, maybe 4hrs. But then we couldn’t get fuel nor spark. I don’t recall what we did to get fuel finally, but it took 3 coils, crank sensors and ECU’s to finally get spark. That was probably another 4hrs.

Then we had some oil leakage from the oil filter/oil cooler attachment and we put some sealent on to cure overnight.

Sunday we had more fluid problems, but it turned out to be power steering fluid and not oil. We’d left unfastened the “closed loop” power steering pump delete hose.

I got to race on Sunday, but got my ass kicked. Instead of 1:54’s and 55’s I was running 1:59’s. Junkyard motor seems to be really sluggish around 4500 revs or so. On theory is that the cause of this my disconnected O2 sensor, any comment on this problem?

Jim Levie and I had a great battle for most of the race. For the very first time I tried to take a defensive line a couple times. I found that I need practice. When I take a defensive line I brake too late and really screw up the turn. Nothing like practice to reduce suckage.

Later edit: Fixed crediting the right Bob that worked his ass off. And he’s not even a SpecE30 guy. He just dove in because he’s that kind of guy. Thanks to Robert Patton for pointing out the error.

Scott, now that it runs and is reliable (no leaks, no smoke, good oil pressure, good cooling) it is time to fine tune the engine by doing the details. Schedule with Jason at Balanced Performance an evening of dyno time . Do your baseline numbers and then start changing things to see what does and does not make a difference. Examples: new plugs, then rotor and cap, change wires. Then start with air/fuel ratios and oxygen sensor connected/disconnected.Try different AFMs, different ECUs.

Schedule some evening time with Jason and coordinate with others as I will have to re-test Laura’s new Strictly German junkyard engine against a strong #241 and a strong Panther engine and maybe Taylor doing some fine tuning.

All of my work will be preceeded with leak-down and compression test numbers to compare as baselines for final outcome.I am a slow learner.

Education: a terrible thing to waste, and I ain’t got none.

Regards, Robert Patton

PS, Scott I’m confident that “Bob Thornton” should be Bob Shields of Bavarian Auto, 1430 Dunlap Roddey Road, Rock Hill SC 29730. Phone 803-329-3991. Bob went above the call of duty and without his help us parts-swapper guys were lost.I learned a bunch from Bob, Carl Gauss and Jim Levie.

Bob is great folks. I know he’s the guy that got Fred back up and running.

Yup. It was an incredible show you guys put on! The “other” Bob, Bob Thornton/Race Engineering, is a great resource to take a look at the work that has been done and help you figure out what you’ve got.

He freshened up the head I have. Unfortunately, based on the amount of oil I went through this weekend I may have to spend some cash on the bottom end.

Thread hijack…Steve, so there is a Bob Thornton.
I missed meeting him. Sounds like a good guy to know.Is he an Atlanta local guy?

And, as you already know from the Balanced Performance outing, you don’t have the straightaway talent to match your driving. The taxi could close on you down the back straight.

Regards, Robert Patton

Robert -

Thornton’s shop is between Charlotte and Greensboro.

Thanks for the compliment but just ask Johan. I am short on end-of-straightaway talent, too. One thing became clear this weekend: contrary to my previous beliefs, I do not have the talent to NOT have ABS…
