This should be fun, count me in if I can help. I’m really good at going to the store for adult beverages.

#22

Sounds like an engine school for the group! Makes me tempted to drive the 8 hours to CMP!

  • Awesome show of support from everyone! Scott, it sounds like your in good hands.

Bobby’s # at Strictly German is (706) 654-9103

I have no idea what he wants, but I imagine the price depends on mileage, auto/manual life (general consensus is that motors from automatics have probably led a softer life but YMMV obviously) and whatever.

You should probably call yourself, if serious, to discuss options.

#24

Bobby at the BMW place near RA has a motor I can buy for $800. It’d probably be the least hassle for everyone if I did that. I think I can fit that in the back of my X5 so I don’t have to present more hassles to folks by pleading for various large items to get brought to CMP so we could mix and match a solution.

So unless a better option appears in the next couple hrs, I’m going to call Bobby up and then get out of here at 0400, head to Atlanta to pick up the motor, buy lots of beer and food, then head to CMP.

Ranger -

Hate to see you eff up the back of the X5.

I have a small landscape trailer that would be perfect for hauling an engine (on a stand I can provide, if you want one of those, too). The stand is at my house, the trailer is at my office and both are located near Lenox Mall in Atlanta.

I use the landscape trailer at least bi-annually. I checked the schedule and it is free until August.

Steve

Thanks Steve, but I’ll already be pulling the race car. Wife says I’m only allowed to pull one trailer at a time. I just test fit pallet in the X5 and I’ll do what I can to not create more problems.

Guys, what gaskets and hardware do I need to find in order to do a motor swap?

#27

Just had another brainstorm. Check your email…

#28

Scott… Dude?! I hate to hear of your latest drama. I wish I was going to be at CMP. I could help Gasman with the beer run, as my mechanical abilities are very limited. I wish you guys the best of luck and I hope you will get to run the sprints.

Y’all have a fun and safe weekend. I’m looking forward to reading and hearing about a great kick-off to the 09 season.

Wish I was going to be there…

#29

Scott, check your email again.

Ranger, I have an engine hoist at my house (directly downtown ATL) that you are more than welcome to borrow, but currently I can’t think of any way of getting it there and back myself (trailer will be full and it won’t fit in the Touareg with my other crap… I doubt it would be able to be slid under the car on the trailer (folds up, but would still require more clearance).

I like this barn raising type engine transplant. Everyone, feel free to add/delete as needed to the running list…

The Help Ranger List

  • Water pump gasket and/or gasket sealer
  • loctite
  • exhaust manifold gaskets (probably)
  • gasket sealer (maker) if you are installing a crank scraper
  • engine hoist
  • 5 qts oil
  • 1 bottle water wetter
  • oil filter
  • valve adjustment gauge
  • an ultimate set of tools from someone’s old man who’s a t.v. repair man
  • timing belt
  • rear subframe :woohoo:
  • brake fluid?
  • wheels and tires

Just bought a junkyard motor from Bobby@StrictlyGerman, the autoyard near RA. OPM is picking it up for me this afternoon and taking it to CMP tomorrow. It should be there in the afternoon.

I tried to figure out a way to get it to CMP myself, but 6hrs to pick up the motor and then 5? hrs from RA to CMP would have been hard to do in time for the enduro.

I need to replace the 8 swiped Koenig wheels. How long does it take to get wheels from Koenig?

Travis recommended new clutch pressure plate bolts and flywheel bolts, so I’m calling around town for them.

I don’t know the price difference, but BimmerWorld has the TD’s on sale for $99 a piece. They are awesome wheels. I am pretty sure I had busted two of them throughout the year and yet each one is still perfectly round.

My notes in paren above. So maybe just gaskets and sealent. PM me with the right kind of sealent and I’ll go get some.

Chuck is bringing me a clutch just in case.

I’m looking around for new pressure plate and flywheel bolts, but no one seems to have them in stock. Can’t have everything.

Pelican Parts has them in stock and can still ship today. You’ll have to ship them overnight which ain’t cheap, but it might be worth it.

  • If you do ship them, sending to a bigger city would be cheaper than to the track (have someone bring them down).

#38

Anyone trade me 6-8 Koenigs for 4 of those new rims that BW is selling? I buy the 4 nice rims and you give me 6-8 Koenigs.

Those bolts are coming in overnight from BW direct from the track. Apparently the BW guys aren’t coming Friday so had to ship.

#39

Scott call Brendan see if he can order might be able to get today.

Or call your local BMW dealer they might have in stock as well.

#40

Scott, I have a clutchmaster clutch and pressure plate, brand new in the box. I’ll loan it to you until you can replace it. Its in my trailer and I’ll be there tonight.
