The air dam issue - what have you got?

#1

Folks,
The Spec E30 directors are trying to get a handle on how air dams should be covered in the CCRs. So I’d like to know what kind of air dams we have in the Southeast. The 3 general categories seem to be:

  1. the pre-88, big bumper car oem “cow catcher”
  2. the post-87 small bumper oem “lips”
  3. homemade versions (aka “home depots”)

I’ll start: I’ve got the (increasingly hard to find) cow catcher.

#1 /the CCx3: Mine, Laura’s, Danny’s.

#3

#1 - Qty 1
#2 - Qty 1

#4

#2 - (the small straight ‘i’ lip, not the 3" wide ‘is’ lip)

#5

#2: Group3racing has 3 of these IS lip versions, when they are not in a gravel trap somewhere.

I have a late model OEM “IS” lip… It’s had a hard life but cuts a mean strip of bermuda

Cow catcher.

Might want to do this at surveymonkey.

Which lip is this one?

You really need to define lip, valance, and spoiler…

All early model US cars came with the sameish front valance. 87 IS cars came with the cow catcher front spoiler installed in front of the valance with a bracket that is NLA. Non is cars in 87 are 4 door and got several different lips added to the early valance. All late model cars came with the same front valance, and there was the i lip the is lip. Any early model car can run a late model valance per the new rules since in 88 we got the diving board bumpers with the late model valance.

Good condition early is front spoilers are getting rare to find, and the mounting bracket is impossible to find. The late model front valance which can fit any E30 are much easier to find and you can even find new aftermarket parts available online.

I’m currently running the early model valance with the is front spoiler with a factory mount, but I’ve got a late model valance I’ll be swapping in soon.

Russell that is an early model front valance with one of the lips available. Basically the base model setup…

So the #47 car is an 87 that came w/ diving boards and an IS air dam. The front air dam had gotten to the point that it didnt want to remain on the car so I changed it.

The rules state that "Front and rear bumper assemblies must be replaced in pairs. The only exception is stated in 9.3.13.3.1 "

And 9.3.13.3.1 states that “9.3.13.3.1. Vehicles with integrated bumper assemblies, 1989 to 91 models, may use aftermarket front one-piece bumper/spoiler unit, provided the original crash bar is maintained.”

That brings me back to our car. I found a BMW bumper in the back of an e30 at the PAP. Turns out it is an e36 bumper (aftermarket?) but does retain the origonal crash bar and shocks. My understanding of the rules it would be ok if it was an 89-91 but it technically illegal since it is an 87.

Either way here is mine now…

#111 - #2 - “is” lip
#30 - #2 - home made lip
#31 - nada
#32 - #2 - “is” lip

I have a bunch of 87 air dams…getting tired of trying to sell them on R#V etc…they are not “perfect” and do not have foglights…

If anyone is interested I can deliver to VIR about anytime.

I’m running the 1987 325is “Cow Catcher”.

…[/quote]

Actually, I think that’s what we’re trying to do. With the variety of OEM stuff, plus the homemade spoilers, splitters, etc. that have appeared on our cars in the last few years it’s complicated. Hence the big director’s discussion.

I’ll report if and when we come to some kind of consensus…

#16

Oops, I almost forgot…

Thanks for all the data folks, that’s exactly what I needed!

#17

How about something simple, like …" any airdam as long as the lowest point is XXX" above the ground with the car at ride height with driver."?

#18

You’re getting ahead of us–we are trying to get data on what’s out there first so we can make sure any rule does the best job of meeting the spirit of the class without requiring a ton of guys and gals to make significant changes to their cars.

Food for thought:laugh:

If anyone in the SE wants one of Al’s airdams, I can fetch one from him at VIR in a couple weeks and bring it south.
