Suspension \"package\" sources

#1

I just picked up an '87 325is to convert for spec e30. When talking to Dave E a couple months ago, he said that a "package" could be bought from a race-prep shop for $1700. My questions are:

  1. Can I spend less than that by sourcing the springs, struts, sways individually?

  2. Is is SpeedSource that sells the package?

For $1700 I’d hope that you’d get more than just spings, shocks, and sways. I purchased my stuff from Bimmerworld and springs, shocks, sways (IE), and rear shock mounts (Rogue) came to about $1300. I purchased GC camber plates direct for something like $289.

You are probably going to need a few more suspension parts on an 87 unless it has really low miles (control arms & bushings, RTAB’s, and subframe bushings).

Beside places mentioned you can try:

http://valleymotorworks.com
It’s owned by Walter who is also building a SpecE30 car. You can give him a call at 916-636-9526

http://www.elephantmotorsports.com
It’s Jack M.'s place. He is also building SPecE30 car

I bought stuff from both and can recommend them
(both guys are members of this forum)

Ireland got a good sway bar package for spec E30

+1 for Flying Brick.
You can get all the Ireland parts from them, FOR LESS than buying direct, and not have to deal with Ireland’s "legendary" customer service.

www.bimmerparts.com is a NASA MA sponsor and is a Bilstein dealer and general parst supplier and all around good guy too. Ask for Chris

ah ha ha, your right on about their customer service. I ordered the sway bar package, alum rear shock mounts and the trail bushings. The order arrived with just the sway bar kit and a set of sub frame bushings, NO trail bush or shock mounts. I called and left two messages. I called another time and no one answered. So I sent an email and finally got a call back. It seems they had 4 sway bar orders that day and sent me someone else’s order. It gets better now. A few days later I walked into my garage and find on my trash can a set of shock mounts and 1 trail bush. I’m thinking where in the fuck did this come from, it’s missing 3 trail bushes. In the morning I found the other 3 trail bushings in the yard. My wife came home from work she works 7p-7a shift and I asked her does she know anything about this. Well it seems my two bad lab pups got a hold of the shipping box and ripped it to shreads, I guess poly and alum is too tough for a lab to chew up. They had the box all over the back yard. A day later a red bushing for the mounts showed up from the yard. I always tell people that if it isn’t nailed down and either steel or rock my labs will shread it. By the way todays their 1st birthday. I have to remember to not leave anything on the ground that they can reach, if it fits in their mouth they will steal it. I’m looking for a caliper pin now!

You may want to read the regulations again. (You need Bilstein Sports)

Check the SpecE30 Regulations tab on the left margin of the website. This from the R&R.

9.3.8.3. Rear Shocks.
9.3.8.3.1. Bilstein Sport shocks - part number B36-2027 shall be used.
9.3.8.3.2. No custom valving is permitted.
9.3.8.4. MacPherson strut inserts.
9.3.8.4.1. Bilstein Sport insert - part number P36-0335 or P30-0334 shall be used.
9.3.8.4.2. No custom valving is permitted.

+1 on BW (I got all my Z3 parts from them)
+1 on Flying Brick, I like that name.
No issues with IE, but it’s more expensive to get their parts direct. You know why? So they don’t have to deal with customers…:stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks. I guess in the lateness of the evening, my mind went blank. Thanks for the post, I have the pdf of the regs, guess I need to print a copy of the build section to keep it handy.

I don’t think a 10mo old lab can comprehend anything that doesn’t chewing on something. Kinda like a three year old with a hammer, where everything looks like a nail.
