sunroof glue

#1

Hey guys,

I’m trying to remove my sunroof cassette and this sucker is GLUED. im putting a torch on it now and it slowly working, but i’m really afraid i’m going to mess up the paint. the car actually has really decent paint so i’d like to avoid that.

Any tips for "safe" removal?

Thanks

did you cut through the three metal straps on each side?

After I cut through those(angle grinder with cutoff blade) I started to cut the part that is glued to the roof, thinking that I would just leave a bit of a ridge. However, the 20yo glue gave way easily in the rear areas and I just trimmed the ridge down flush where it didn’t come off.

cheers,
bruce

hrm. well i’m making this as difficult as possible for myself… i’m trying to work around the roll bar :stuck_out_tongue:

i gave up on the glue and just cut it out. i have the front half out… no i gotta find a way to wiggle back there and get to the rear.

Don’t use an air chisel. Tends to alter the roof skin.

What defines the "cassette"? My 88 has an interior sheet metal structure with various holes and cutouts that runs almost front to back and encases the sunroof mechanism. Is that what you are talking about when discussing removing the cassette? Or is the cassette just the actual sunroof mechanism itself? Another words, If I remove this interior sheet metal structure, the only thing left will be the single layer, outer roof panel. Is that correct?

Right. Once the cassette is gone, the roof will almost deflect under the weight of a pair of pliers!

I was unsure about what could be taken out too. I definitely did not want to remove a big chunk of metal only to find out I took out too much. Check out this thread, http://spece30.com/component/option,com_mamboboard/Itemid,/func,view/catid,12/id,7959/#7959 for some photos of what can be removed.

So if I have a cutoff wheel and a torch, what is it, a good afternoon to remove the sunroof? I’m considering leaving mine in there, trying to figure out how much of a hassle it is.

Thanks! That what I thought but it would really have ruined my day if I found out after the fact that I was wrong.

It’s worth removing for the gains in headroom. You’ll have to cut it on the sides near the B pillar. I’d start at the back and work forward, as the rear is the easier part to get off. Don’t forget to cut the drain hoses off. Should only take a couple hours to do.
Roof will seem flimsy without it, but once you add the metal back in to close the sunroof hole off it regains some strength.

There is a strip of metal about 5" wide that spans across the roof from B pillar to B pillar. the back edge of the sunroof hole skin folds over the edgs of this. Is it safe to take this strip of metal out, too?

I have everything out but the junction of this strip, the middle outside edges of the cassette, the roof, and the bpillars. and my roll bar is RIGHT there. what a PITA…

I left it in. It looks important to keep the roof shape.
