Street Legality in N.C. & V.A.

#1

Just wondering if any of you guys (and gals?) have any experience with keeping a full-prepped SpecE30-style race car street legal in N.C. and/or VA (I’m moving to N.C. sometime next year)?

In particular, I’m wondering about the door bars and the knee bar/lateral brace – have you ever had any hassles either during the annual inspection or a traffic stop (granted, I haven’t had a stop since 1996, but still…).

Thanks.

No experience on the particular question, but where in NC are you moving to?

I’m in Burlington which is central to just about everywhere.

Most likely, either Durham or Pinehurst

Dan:

The only issues I have heard about are the seatbelts. As I understand it, a racing harness isn’t DOT approved.

However, I never got stopped by the Man and ever had trouble at the local (club racer owned) inspection station.

Make sure there is enough tread on the tires.

Also, if you’ve removed the cats, keep that in mind if they are doing a visual inspection.

No longer needed on OBD-1 cars after January 1. But looking at the checklist for safety items on NC inspection, it looks like everything else on a specE30 car will pass.

I just had my car inspected with the 5-points in, factory belts removed and it was no problem. (87 325is)
