What is the rev limit of the stock M20 with the stock chip? My G2X says around 6350. I thougth it was 6500. The tach says around 6500. What is it actually set at? Anyone know?

If I recall correctly, it is 6500 in 1st and 2nd. It is 6250 in 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
All of the BMWs I have owned have those numbers as their rev limits.

I never knew that. No wonder when my shift light is set to 6300 I hit rev limiter in 3rd :silly:
AFAIK, an E30 has no way of knowing (or even guessing) what gear it’s in. A mainstream magazine published that the 1995 M3 had a gear-variable revlimiter back when the car was introduced, but I never saw it confirmed in any of the technical literature published by BMW.

something that is spinning is telling the computer what gear you must be in.
How about that?

If you look at your tachometer closely, you will notice a smaller red bar from 6250 to 6500 then a larger red bar to indicate red line in all 5 gears. The smaller bar is to indicate that there is a difference in red lines between those two RPMs.

i don’t remember a vehicle speed signal being listed as one of the inputs to the DME. In which case it would be impossible for the DME to have a speed (or gear) sensitive redline. My recollection is that the DME only has one redline, but I can see overshoot occuring in the first two gears making it look like they have a higher redline.
