Stock Chip...part 2

#1

okay, so I replaced the aftermarket performance chip with my stock chip and the car wouldnt start. the stock chip is the original chip that came in the car and is correctly oriented on the board.

This leads me to believe the chip is bad. My questions are: can this be fixed? should I just get another used chip that will work? Which numbers from my ECU do I need to match up to get the correct chip? Does anybody have chips for sale around here?

Thanks,

Brian

If you have a 153 ECU, you might consider replacing it with a 173 unit – it was the dealer replacement for the oft-flaky 153’s.

This is a 153 (both from google):

This is a 173:

I don’t know how to identify the chip for specific ECU…when you buy the chip make sure that it came from exact ECU as yours (identified by number such as Bosch 0-261-200-153 , -173, - 351, etc). You’ll probably have better luck finding stock chip on other boards…
If you can, before buying a chip, borrow complete ECU (including a stock chip original to that box) from someone and see if the car will run. If it does you know your problem is in the “boxâ€?, if it doesn’t start looking at other areas to troubleshoot as your ECU might be good. IIRC, you can get any ECU for I car (doesn’t have to match yours). Only downside to that method is that if your car elect system is “badâ€? you run a risk of damaging test ECU as well.

this is a great article with a table that shows all of the ECU’s that came on various models - there are over 10 that came on e30’s. My car has a '525 ecu on it but I don’t know if that was original (it had started living a life as a parts car before I bought it)
