steering wheel size and quick release

#1

I’ll be undoing my power steering. I’d like to get a MOMO wheel and quick release. What diameter steering wheels are you guys using? Is anyone using a quick release? I’d like to get the wheel an inch or so closer to me if possible. Any suggestions?
Thanks In advance,
John

I have this quick release with a momo corse. The addition of the quick release and the offset of the corse brings the wheel out quite a bit, but lets me have my seat back farther. Seating position is perfect for me.

350mm seems to be the most common size wheel guys are using. I run the LTB quick release. It moved the wheel a good 1.5" closer. However, I’d recommend going with one of the ball bearing locking QR’s on Ebay. They have zero slop as opposed to the splined QR’s which always have some slop or develop some over time.

Here’s mine. It is a bearing type. I chose it because it has a big release flange (or whatever you call it) that makes it easy to release with gloves on.

Here’s the quick release I have…

It’s a simple design, but is very easy to put on/remove and doesn’t have the splines that will wear out. My only complaint is that it seems to be tighter at the end of a long race (harder to remove). That’s actually a good thing I guess!

I have a 350mm OMP wheel. If you’re wanting it closer to you the “dish” is what you need to look at. My OMP is 70mm and it definitely puts the wheel a little closer which I prefer.

so you need a hub adapter AND the quick release hub if you want to remove the steering wheel? I’m assuming these don’t just bolt on to the stock steering location.

Kevin,

Yes, you need a hub adapter and the quick release.

My quick release is identical to the one Ranger posted above, except it does not have that big flange on it. The flanged one was not available when I ordered mine.

You certainly can have a look at mine to see how the spacing is. I like it as it puts the wheel a little closer to me than the OMP wheel with just the hub adapter.

Thanks for all the input and suggestions guys. I’m at the point with my cage install where I am working out all the ergonomics of the steering and seat position. I was thinking a 350mm wheel would hit about right.
Thanks again

I’ve got this piece as well, flying brick and factory 3 (forum sponsors :stuck_out_tongue: ) also carry this as well, I’ve got it with a Momo Mod 88 (I think I have the smaller of the two, can’t 100% remeber) but it does bring the wheel right about where I want it; its just a touch high (I need to shim the colum down a hair). Otherwise I have no complaints (though I have noticed the same thing that it gets a little tight after its been on there for a while), for refrence I’m 5’11" and am using a sabelt taurus XL seat that’s sitting on VAC floor adapters so the seat is rather low, that could be some of my wheel hight issues…

Hi,

I’ve been driving a supercharged Miata for the last 3 years. I have a smooth leather Momo Race steering wheel in it. It’s 300mm in diameter and what I really like about it is the thumb tabs are properly located for my smaller hands. When you look at my driving videos, I don’t wrap my thumbs around the wheel, I have them on top of the wheel on the tabs. What I don’t like about it is that the wheel is in the way of the instrument cluster and it’s rather slick to hold on to. I find that I have to dampen my gloves for a little glove/wheel tack before I go out to drive.

Now I’m trying to get a seat and steering wheel sourced and installed in my Spec E30 currently in process. They’re of primary importance in preparation to get the car to a cage builder.

I did some measuring before I pulled the dash out and know that anything smaller than a 350mm wheel will obscure the dash too much(like you really have time to look at it any way :)) I plan on using the Tekniq Snap-Off quick disconnect. Between that and the hub adapter, I’m hoping the steering wheel to be moved back to me enough, so I think I just need a “flat” wheel (I’m 5’10).

Since I like the thumb tabs on my Momo Race so much, I’ve been looking to get a 350mm suede wheel similar to the Momo Race. The Momo Mod 80 looks to be the winner, but I thought I could find something more cost effective. I just recieved a Volanti Stealth from Bimmerworld that I thought would fit the bill. It’s not going to work - the thumb tabs moved up with increase in the wheel diameter and I’ll never be able to use them. Also the wheel feels too narrow in girth. I think something a little fatter in the hands would help with reduction in grip effort.

I believe the wheel that came in my car is an E30 Mtech 1. It’s 380mm in diameter and about 30mm in girth - feels good, but it’s too large in diameter. I’ll wear myself out turnin’ it! My thumbs drop comfortably onto the thumb notches without wrapping around the wheel.

I’ve been told that suede will help my grip problem, but I dunno - I’m wondering if my hands just aren’t getting old. I’m wondering if rather than suede, some smooth fatty steering wheel with something like a tack cloth rubbed all over it wouldn’t work.

Surely I’m not the only one with grip/comfort issues these days. What wheels do you guys like that are easy on grip force?

Also, Tekniq Auto, the manufacturer of the Snap-Off qd, has a package deal shipped for $409 total - steering wheel, race qd and hub adapter. The Tekniq wheel I’d like is the Suede 965, but it’s a little small at 340mm. It would conserve steering energy though. It is stitched and made in Italy. This Volante I got is stitched and I’m not so keen on it. Momos are glued not stitched. Has anyone experience with Tekniq steering wheels?

In my experience the choice of gloves has a large effect on how easy it is to hold/turn the wheel. The GeForce gloves I have are lined with kangaroo leather. They don’t feel as slick as other types of lining. And as a bonus the leather doesn’t get hard after being wet and drying out. The only downside is that they are more expensive.

I’d get the wheel and mount it where it is going to be before you door bars get welded in place. You don’t want to get too close where your elbow bumps the bar. Mine barely clears by about 1/2".

Well, it looks like I’m down to the following 2 wheels:

The OMP Targa @ 330mm dia and it’s pretty fat at 34 x 27 on the hoop girth. This wheel is flat with no offset. I have a friend that’s sold/handled a lot of racing product and he won’t fail to mention how impressed with their product he is.

I can get a pretty killer deal on a Momo Mod 80 in the next couple of days. It’s 350mm dia, 28mm on the hoop girth and has 37mm offset.

Anybody got any other suggestions?
